I just had this issue today. I tried your suggested work around, it worked, I was able to get back into the game. But it also reset my google wallet and several other things with my google account.

UPDATE: I do not recommend this work around. It also reset my blue tooth connections, specifically my smart watch, requiring me to set it back up

UPDATE: I ended up having to factory reset my phone to restore functionality for everything. I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS FIX/WORK AROUND!
