Re: Bluetooth Xbox Controller Causing Severe Lag

@Cavetrolls To check can you see if there are any windows updates ( or optional ones) to download. Also can you use Device Manager to check specifically for updates to your Bluetooth device?

  • @EA_Illium I can confirm that there are no pending windows updates (including optional ones other an a preview Windows Update) and the controller has the latest driver (as explicitly checked in Device Manager).

    Hey @Cavetrolls

Thank you for checking on this. Does it make a difference if you connect via Bluetooth before launching the game or after?

I would also like to go through some of the basics for troubleshooting, go through these steps, and let me know if this continues.

    • Run a repair on Origin.
      • Select My Game Library in Origin.
      • Right-click on the game tile.
      • Select Repair Game.
    • Clear Origin Cache
    • Run as admin, by Right-clicking on the game desktop icon, select 'Run as Admin'
    • Check any Anti-virus to not interfere with Origin and Squadrons files
    • Try to Clean Boot

  • @EA_Illium No - this occurs both if I connect before starting and after it's started.

I actually own this through Steam however I verified the integrity of the all the game files.
I tried both running as admin and disabling my anti-virus before realizing it was the controller causing issues 😉

And I just tried the clean boot and had the same issue after ~30 minutes game time. I did verify that by connecting the controller via USB instead of Bluetooth the issue doesn't reproduce so something about the Bluetooth is causing issues. I should note that when Squadrons is having issues, everything else continues to perform like normal. I did a 3dmark run when Squadrons was lagging and my performance was normal.
  • I have the same issue, but I am using a wired X-Box controller. It runs and controlls perfect in ultra quality during campaign, but regardless of graphics settings I have found multiplayer unplayable. I will nudge the controller and then just randomly stutter around the screen, sometimes flying straight into the wall. It almost feels like someone else is trying to fly my ship at the same time, and I am fighting against them.

@Slaughterloo To confirm you are on a wired connection with your Xbox controller or are you using it in Bluetooth mode as well?

Same here since forced update today (Origin via Epic Store), while was working ok yesterday (or maybe was lucky, or maybe just because this doesn't manifest in earlier game campaign missions). Controller seems to become non-responsive for seconds at a time, completely randomly but very frequently (every 5-15 sec), both in menus and during campaign missions. This is already bad in menus, but makes the game completely unplayable when flying. When this triggers, the current input (for example, turn left) continues to be processed while new inputs are ignored for several seconds, leading to all sorts of bad maneuvers, collisions with larger ships and environment, impossibility to aim, etc. It feels like the game/OS is losing the Bluetooth signal for a while but assumes it's still receiving the same input. This looks unrelated with an actual performance issue (24-core 64GB dev machine on RTX 2070 here; CPU and GPU far from overloaded). Can provide some ETL traces of BT or other if needed.

  • Stopping the Bluetoooth headset on the same receiver improves things dramatically. But there is still some occasional lag, although much less frequent. That does not really explain why things were working perfectly with that same setup yesterday. But it seems indeed related to BT, possibly to bandwidth. Note that there might be 2 different bugs since @Slaughterloo uses a wired one. However in the video from the original poster @Cavetrolls we can see some Surface Headphones BT headset (not sure if connected though).

  • Playing with an XBox One controller via Bluetooth keeps causing the game to freeze, to the point where I got penalized for being booted out of matches.  Using an XBox 360 wireless controller with the 360 PC Wireless receiver has no issue.  With the XBox One controller, the image on the screen would freeze; I could alt-tab away, but I cannot kill the task.  After about ten minutes, the game eventually closes on its own.

  • Same problem here.  Win 10, xbox one controller connected via bluetooh, VR (index).  Everything was fine until about 30 min. into mission 12, and then suddenly the input lag was 3+ seconds.
