Tie fighter pilot's disadvantage, here's why

By watching the trailers again and again, I have a bad feeling that in general empire pilots will lose in the airspace combat. The cockpit view of tie fighters are extremely limited, only a round part of the screen is shown to the player in the combat, however X-wing, A-wing have a much wide cockpit view range. Empire pilots view range are much smaller than the rebels.

And, I noticed in the hunted trailer, tie fighter's cockpit view is larger than in real game. You can see many parts of the cockpit are transparent, however in the real game play, it appears that tie fighter cockpit has shutters around each corner, with only a round area for players to view.

What do you guys think? Fair?

  • I agree. It does seem like TIE fighter pilots have a more limited view in the cockpit. Hopefully there are other advantages and that you may get used to it somehow.

  • Wonder how different it will be from XvT or XWA?  Had a bit of a disadvantage there too, but if you paid attention to your HUD and getting a fairly good sense of what is around you then it's not as limiting.  Granted nothing beats the wide open views you get in an X-Wing, or A-Wing.  In TIE Fighter I pretty much always had my eyes on my HUD, you pretty much had to.

Y-Wings had a fairly limited view as well, not nearly as bad as TIE's though.

  • true, the Empire is limited view, but when i was in VR i noticed the TIE's have upper and rear windows.

where at least the X doesn't have up or rear

  • Having just played the prologue in VR, I have to agree, but the target direction arrows at the edge of the field of view certainly help.

Years ago, I think it was in one of the incredible cross-section books, I saw something that suggested the TIEs use holographic emitters to expand the pilot's view of the battlespace. Something like that, or an implied AR vision element inside the helmet would certainly help, perhaps just a red outline or holographic "shadow" of nearby ships/rocks/etc. "visible" through the sides of the cockpit, due to holographic projectors, could retain the look of a limited FoV as depicted in the movies, but add to the pilot's awareness of the surrounding battlespace.

After all, some newer jets and tanks are trialing tech like this IRL.
