Dead Space 2023 Remake: Crashes on saving or loading

Dead Space Remake 2023 crashes when trying to save a game or load a game.

Here is what happens and what I have tried:

  1. I played through the game three times. No real issues. Save, load, lots of fun!
  2. I created another New Game+.
  3. I played through to where I need to restart the centrifuge.
  4. I attempted a Save Game at the engineering control location and the game crashed.
  5. I restarted and selected "Continue" and it played from the last Auto Save.
  6. I played it past where I tried to save and tried to save at the save station by the centrifuge door. The game crashed.
  7. I restarted and tried to load an earlier save. The game crashed after I clicked on "Load Game."
  8. I decided to start another New Game+ thinking my current "game" files were corrupted. I attempted a Save Game at the save station in Tram Control. The game crashed.
  9. I uninstalled/re-installed the game. Still crashes when trying to load an old save or trying to save within the game.
  10. I verified the game files from within Steam.
  11. I updated my NVIDIA drivers. Still crashes

It still autosaves and I have 19 save files for my latest game. I have a total of 436 save files. I can select "Continue" when starting and it loads the last autosave no problem. I just have to play for awhile and then try to exit the game and see how much time I will lose and try to get to a spot with minimal time lost. Annoying, but workable.

The Dead Space executable is allowed in Windows Firewall and Defender.

I have changed nothing since installing Dead Space and my first three games and when it started crashing, at least knowingly. Windows may have updated recently. I hate those auto-updates...

Here are some system specifics:

Alienware x17-R2

Windows 11 Pro 64 bit

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop

12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900HK 2.5 GHz - Not overclocked.

64 Gb RAM

I have the mini dump files, but I can't attach them. The extension ".mdmp" and ".zip" are not allowed. Opening the ".mdmp" files in Visual Studio doesn't give me any insight.

Thank you.

David

  • @joe_eby Hello, I found the issues. The issue is with the number of saves you have. I created an archive folder and moved 400+ saves to that folder. I could begin saving and loading in game, again. I only left about 20 saves.

  • I have the same exact issue and EA won't let you submit a trouble ticket.  The last time I buy a game from these guys. Here is a video of the problem I posted earlier.

I have the same issues but my problem is that the save point doesn't show any graphics and then it crashes. If I try to a load a game from the in-game menu, the game crashes. I have modified my antivirus settings, set the game to admin, verified the integrity of the game, and re-installed. I even renamed my save file folder and deleted the original Dead Space (2023) folder in steamapps. I uploaded a video showing  how the game crashes.

Here is a video.  My problem is different because it seems the save function bugs out:  https://www.loom.com/share/41e00109204f42209bfeb8e678637b5f

Ahhh, I was wondering about that. My saves are also stored on Steam. I'll see if I can move them.

    Thank You!

I have the exact same issue after playing through the game several times. It started crashing at the save station and now will not save at all. Also found the save folder in Steam but I dont know how to clear or move the saves. Also cannot find any save folder links in the Dead Space app itself. Could you post how to move these files as I am not familar with the process. Thanks.

Ps I tried to reach out to EA about the issue but all I got was Dead Space!

I'll do my best. Remember, you do this at your own risk 🙂

I went to my Steam account and disabled the online backing up. This prevents Steam from restoring the save files you move or delete. I honestly don't remember how I got there, but I just kept clicking through on the settings or tools for the game on the steam application.

Next, I went to the directory where the save files are located. On my laptop, this is C:\Users\{My User Name)\Documents\Dead Space (2023)\settings\steam

The save files are named like SG01-263.sav, or SG05-420.sav

I selected all the save files for the games I didn't want to go back to, which were from SG01-01.sav to SG04-436.sav (this last file was the last saved game I had before the error), and I moved them into a sub directory. I was then able to begin a "New Game +" and have been happily saving away.

    Hope this helped.

My issue is that after a death, it reloads but in less than a second crash!  back to desk top, with EA app as if nothing happened. I have done all the normal stuff, repair game, keep saves to no more than 10,

It's not my PC but I ran sfc and DISM plus windows 1 minute diagnostic, checked all logs, events, everything. There is no record or popup error message at all.

Thing is I played 17 hours up until March 23rd. During those first 17 hours no issues at all.

Then today (April 13th) played again. No settings change. Also I always repair any game regardless before a session. (Using EA app, not Steam for this game.)

After perhaps 20 minutes I got ripped to shreds and my head was gone, just a bloody stump. (Sorry, I mean I died, that's all) As usual the game started from the last check point save as usual - I die a lot in unpleasant ways.

Any way it didn't really load, just started, and  went back to my desktop. It crashed in less than a second into reloading, like it couldn't be bothered as I am such a crud player.

Seriously, I can only guess the reason which is pointless.

Sorry for the silly bloody stump neck bits, just tryng not to get annoyed. Just wanted to say it has started to happen to me, with zero messages anywhere. This post is not helpul, just wanted to add myself to the Deadspace remake crashers club.

    Hey everyone,

Wanted to jump in on this before the weekend hits. We have seen other reports similar to this, so I wanted to provide some info and steps that have helped and others that may with this crashing.

First, the number of saves. We want to limit that the best we can but a lot of times the data on the save can become corrupted. If you have ever played a single-player game, you have experienced that.

    • Remove the excess saved games you do not need
    • Save your current game as a new save file and close the game down
    • Repair the game via the platform you are on

Let's also knock out a few other things that may help. Check out this link as it has some steps that may also be beneficial.

As an SSD is preferred on this one, most are not large storages as we like to run the OS on that, so make sure that your game and launcher are on the same drive.
