Re: How to Import mass effect 1 saves to mass effect 2 on PC

As I said, the config utility is in the Binaries folder under the installation folder. If you use Origin, I think it's Program Files - Origin Games - Mass Effect - Binaries.

You don't have to put your saves in Binaries.

In the Binaries folder, there is a program called MassEffect2Config. Open that.

In the config utility, on the left, there should be a 'Save Games' button. Click that.

Then you see a button that says 'Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games'. Click that.

Then, in the browse screen, locate the saves folder, which should be under Documents - BioWare - Mass Effect - Save. Click OK.

Now close the config utility and start Mass Effect 2.

  • I hate to tell you this, but doing this screws me up  bad.  The game now synchs and does nothing when I try to start, and I have to uninstall then reinstall me2 to get functionality back, even after updating the game through Origin.  I tried updating before and after reinstalling, but nothing works.  Have to conclude that the game simply does not work as advertised, so I'm mighty upset.  Even if this worked I'd be angry because I shouldn't have go through all this crap of locating my saves in the first place. I don't think not wanting to go over budget is any excuse for this shoddy work.

  • Just downloaded patch manually, but it just creates another problem to prevent the game starting.  All this and they couldn't be bothered with controller support either?

I'll try applying the patch after another clean install.  At this rate it looks like playing the game will take less time than getting it to run.

I assume you mean that ME2 isn't starting.  Have you posted your question to the ME2 forum?

I personally had almost no trouble at all running ME2 (intel core i7, nvidia 630m).  Assuming you've not started playing yet, perhaps you could disable cloud sync before starting?  Once you've got your character imported, re-enable cloud sync.

  • Applying the patch after fresh reinstall gets me the same new problem:  awc.dll is failing.  Searching the problem suggests Adobe Air needs updating, but I did and the problem persists.  I have decided to reinstall one more time and forget about importing.  I am never getting another Bioware product again.

So you know, I'm running Windows 7 x64 with icore7, GeForce GTX 560M with 3GB memory on the card. I can play the game, but only if I give up my ME1 savegame.  I would try disabling sync as you suggest, but each download is several hours and I have now wasted the entire day on this.  It just isn't worth risking another reinstall for.

Ok, fair enough. I've got one last suggestion, then.  You could modify a new ME2 game with the Mass Effect Save Game Editor:

If you can remember the various decisions you made, you can check them off with this.

Disabling sync shouldn't force you to reinstall the game.  It just forces it to look only locally for saved games, which in turn eliminates one possible area where things could be going wrong.

Ok, a bit of digging.  On this link there are two comments of note; one from AlienPB and the very last post on the page:

I actually think the last post may have something to it.

Alternately, if it would help I could send you my ME1 save game (which transferred fine) and you could see if that works for you.  Not that you want to play mine, but it would help to narrow what the problem is.  If you have the same issue, your saved game is fine.  If you don't, you had a corrupt save.

Ok, that's enough spagetti at the wall.  So much for my last suggestion.

Just to be clear, I do appreciate your trying so hard to help me on this.  Also to be clear, I neglected to say in my last comment that I was in the process of reinstalling, and testing the sync theory would have meant trying the import one more time, and so far all my efforts to do so have resulted in an unplayable game.  It's a shame because I can tell from the opening cut scene- which is all I've seen so far- the game defaults to different results from me1 than what I wanted.

I suppose the important thing is that the game runs.  Ultimately I'm not so type A that I can't appreciate that fact.  So thanks for all the help.

I believe you can edit a live game with the saved game editor.  Not totally sure, but to hedge your bets you could make a copy of the bioware directory in Documents before you run it.  If it fails, delete what's there and restore the backup.

But hey, good luck!  It's an awesome game.
