Activision does it to put an extra step in the way of cheaters but it will also help reduce smurf accounts...all I see are lvl 2s running around with 15+ kills like every other game. Make it so once a phone number is used it cannot be used again to create another account. It won't completely eliminate smurfs and cheaters but it will help.
You dont even have to spoof numbers, you can order free pre-paid SIM cards which you dont even have to charge credit on them. Shipping is also for free. You can get like 5 cards per person in my country nowadays because there is a lot of companies selling telecomunication services. Most of them belong to those 3 main companies, but they will still send you free phone numbers to your postbox.
Adding phone number wouldnt help anything. You would have to make accounts based on real life IDs which can be very dangerous for your real life when this data gets to wrong hands...
I think they should make a law which makes cheating in video games minor offence (so people would have to pay money after getting caught) because youre basically damaging companies property while cheating in their game.
