Oh I realize that. But even then, it would be more fair if the most damage was awarded the kill. (Not totally fair, just MORE fair, and not that much more complicated to figure out from a server coding perspective.)

Conversely, if it was done the way you would like: if I see you unload into an enemy, break the shield, and then do even more damage before you run dry, then where would be my incentive to finish him off knowing that I'll only get a paltry few points of damage? And I'm not convinced that there are very many players who are actively scouting to steal squadmate's kills, let alone are capable of finding the opportunity and capitalizing on it.
From a coding perspective it would be just as easy to give 9/10ths of a kill to the guy who did 90% of the damage, and 1/10th of a kill to the guy who did 10%, regardless of who fired the last bullet. Most fair of all? I mean, a k/d is always full of decimal points anyway, so why not?
