I have to agree with the op. I'm not saying the old system didn't promote a certain degree of toxicity. It did. Though I think the word "promote" is a little heavy handed.
Let me put it this way: If the devs really believed or cared about any degree of toxicity in the old system they could have very easily and cheaply removed the "drop solo" option. The effect would have been similar but different. And still, imo, horrific.
Every player should have the ability to break away, even at the risk of being mistakenly or rightly called "toxic," and land where they choose. No one is under any illusion that they can get to diamond this way, and if a diamond player is solo queueing and gets "lesser" squadmates who drop alone... well, tough. That's the way of the world. And Repsawn doesn't need to be social-engineering player behavior. Build the sandbox and let the players decide for themselves how to use it.
Hey Recon!!!
We've already debated this. We agree on some things, but I disagree with your "free will" approach for any ranked mode in any game. Keep that free will B.S. in Wildcard, Pubs, and the Mixtape.
The ship has sailed and it's not coming back. At this point y'all can Cry Me A River
Y'all lost. Don't be sore losers.
LOL :-P

I can appreciate your enthusiasm on the subject, but this is yet another example of Respawn going a specific route to please a specific, and I'd wager small, contingent of players, and doing it with no thought at all to unintended consequences. What might some of those consequences be, you ask?
Well, first, I know for a fact that some players have been driven out of ranked completely, operating with the conviction that this change is a deal breaker. How many such players? We will never know. But another way of putting it is: how many can the mode afford to lose? If some players have left ranked, no matter how small the number, is it much of a leap to imagine them leaving the game completely?
Second, suppose a player is unhappy with the change but opts to stay in the game and the mode. We'll use a hypothetical player and call him "recon hero," just a made up name off the top of my head. Let's say this day-one player is already weary of all the changes this game has endured over the last six years, and that the changes coming faster and more dramatically in the last year or so have worn on him particularly poorly. Let's say this player has a streak of spite in him. So imagine this player going in to ranked, maybe just to play a map that's not in rotation in trios, maybe just for a change of pace, maybe just to see if the new changes are as bad as he thinks they are... whatever the reason. There he is. Let's say he likes an edge drop and in the new system he gets one sometimes. And sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't, what then does he do? Drop center with his idiot teammates (yes, they're ALL idiots) where he is surrounded by enemies on all sides, has limited looting options and limited movement options? If he chooses to use what position options he has and try to get out to the edge of the circle then he has to leave his teammates as surely as if he still had the "drop solo" option. They won't go with him. Whether he simply makes the ping and starts to move, or gets on the mic to explain what he's doing and why he's doing it.
So, at least for this hypothetical player, the net results don't change. The game just makes him work harder for the result. And his teammates are just as unhappy. And so is he. They still die without him trying to defend a bad position for no other reason than "gun fights are fun," and then he just jumps off the map to get everyone back to the lobby. Could he have stayed and tried to get to positive RP? Sure. Then again, when you're playing your qualifiers and your RP is at zero then where's the incentive to not go negative? There isn't one because you can't have negative RP. Where's the incentive to "strive" in your qualifiers knowing that moving up the ladder more quickly will not get you:
- better, smarter squadmates
- easier enemies
- a certain path to master
- a free titan two in the mail
This system as it is now is trying to force behaviors. If most players are sheep who will allow themselves to be herded then so be it. If they allow themselves to be herded against their better judgment, then that's just a poke in the player's eye. And I've already spelled out how some players might react to getting poked in the eye.
I genuinely hope that the change has made some players' lives better. I hope it wasn't done for nothing. But I also hope that people are not living under any illusion that it drives exclusively good behavior, or that it was the right choice for the over-all health of the game, or that it's a move that will grow the player base.

Recon.... I'm going to keep it simple K.I.S.S. Rule
I care about everybody who plays Apex, noobs to pros. Currently, pros "DO NOT" want to play Ranked. What is your solution for that? 🤔
Because in some of your posts you've displayed disdain for the pro scene. I kind of think you, and others, simply don't care. Apex needs more viewership and that's not going to come from the "average player". EA/Respawn needs to support the pro scene more and it starts with Ranked!!!!!
In regards to the POI draft, Respawn had to implement this change for the pro scene because some teams would invade enemy POIs and sabotage their game. It's a fair argument to suggest invading your enemies POI is a legit strategy. That's debatable. Although, the pro players advocated for more "structure" because the stakes are too high. Additionally, spectators/fans of the ALGS appreciated the change because we don't want teams sabotaging each others games. The spectators in Sapporo and the ALGS world want to see great game play. Otherwise, why fly to Japan? Why show up for B.S.? 🤷♂️
Furthermore, these changes simply made their way to Ranked, and rightfully so. I would rather Respawn create a way for pros to come back to Ranked (similar to Season 2) and for spectators/fans to have great game play to watch 24/7. If you all don't care about pros playing Ranked then why should I care that Lil Timmy can't have his way in Ranked, especially when there are less competitive game modes available. Lil Timmy, just hot drop in Pubs or Wildcard. No no no, Lil Timmy wants to be a Predator, just because. Lil Timmy can go kick rocks!!!! 😒
Here's what's about to happen next Recon:
Removal of ranked splits, Better ranked rewards, End of season Apex Predator Tourneys (4 or 5 yearly).
Ranked is going to get a lot harder because Respawn has to make sure it's top performers are playing the game, duh!!! That's free marketing. Additionally, discriminating against top performers is extremely counter productive. I haven't heard one pro player disagree with the new Ranked changes. They have stated that more changes are needed.
Sooo... I don't know what else to tell y'all. Everything is happening in phases. Just open your eyes.
Phase 1: Switch to POI draft
Phase 2: Add the Play with Squad feature to give solo queue players a way to stack.
Phase 3: Remove splits, Revamp rewards for top performers, End of season tourneys.
Lastly, you all complain about cheaters so much. Gamers have been cheating since Sega. Once all the changes have been implemented cheaters will have a much harder time because more eyes will be on Ranked. Additionally, this system will put more pressure on EA/Respawn because you can't invite cheaters to an Apex Predator Invitational. Sometimes you have to go through the backdoor if the front door is locked.

Another good post. And you are right to point out that I have a great disdain for people who play games professionally. Not limited to video games, if that makes any difference.
And to that point let me start with a quote from your post: "pro players advocated for more "structure" because the stakes are too high." This is the same attitude that is killing "professional" sports across the board. Football players can't play football because they might get hurt. Racecar drivers won't race anymore unless temperature and precipitation are "perfect" because there's too much at stake. There are a million other examples of delicate flowers not wanting their ecosystem upset by anything foreign or dangerous or unpredictable.
And I have to say that I think it's possibly a little naive to assume that pros have left the game because ranked rewards were inadequate or because they couldn't cope with random drops. I think most left because no one can do anything at that level for six years. This game is just plain old. I'm not saying Respawn has done an otherwise flawless job of managing the game, much less the ranked experience, but don't let's pretend fixed drops is some kind of magic bullet that will restore competitive integrity to the game. It might be a necessary first step, but it will amount to nothing in the end because, downplay it all you like, but nothing in ranked can ever have any meaning without a high-functioning anti-cheat. Which this game does not have. I know it. You know it. Everyone knows it. And that means that when you get one-clipped while executing complex motion at a great distance from your assailant... you would be a fool to assume they were doing it legitimately, even though they may have been.
"Once all the changes have been implemented cheaters will have a much harder time because more eyes will be on Ranked." I don't know how else to characterize this other than to repeat: Naive.
"Additionally, spectators/fans of the ALGS appreciated the change because we don't want teams sabotaging each other's games."
On this I would be curious to hear more. I'm not a spectator of anything, so I don't pretend to understand why people would want to watch others do something that they could simply do themselves, and I also don't understand why one tactic would be considered less watchable than any other - assuming that confrontation is the result. Why else do people watch? On this one I'm ready to be educated.
