Crypto...is good???
I recently started playing crypto because I just felt like trying him out because I rarely do, and I feel like he’s a pretty powerful character.
You can get a really good idea of the surrounding area, and which moves are the best moves to make. There isn’t a single other character that lets you see as much of the map around you as crypto, with the obvious drawback being that his play style is very slow. I personally don’t mind the slowness because I’m normally a caustic main and I like to play the game slowly and methodically to guarantee a win.
A lot of my struggles in this game come from not knowing where the enemies are. I rarely pay attention to players around me when everyone is jumping from the dropship, and I just don’t like putting myself in a situation where I’m “between” two squads so I can be pinched, or third-partied, and scouting out an area with my drone before my random squadmates get there is infinitely valuable, even if I’m not there when my teammates are because I can help them out by scanning enemies and using the ultimate.
One obvious tidbit that many keep people from using Crypto is that is drone is very easy to destroy, but I’ll be the first to say that that’s not exactly true in the (fairly high-level ) PS4 games that I play in. If you kinda zig-zag your drone and fly perfectly over someone’s head, it can be extremely hard to hit the drone using a controller, since there is a limit to the Y looking rotation and you have to start dizzyingly rapidly moving the X look, which in itself is a time-consuming and distracting process, considering that crypto’s squadmates are probably chasing you down right now. Another important thing to keep in mind (at least when playing at high level) is that nobody takes a crypto drone seriously. Seriously, when was the last time you thought to yourself, “damn, that was a good drone play”? Exactly.
One funny situation that took place earlier today was when I was being forced through a the chokepoint tunnel under the railway with the vault in it, so I sent my drone through it, only to find 3 lousy campers sitting atop the pipes in the ceiling! They fired at my drone, but it didn’t even matter if they destroyed it because I already knew what they were up to.
With all that being said, Crypto needs some sort of buff. It doesn’t matter that he’s kinda powerful as a niche character. He wouldn’t touch the meta with a ten-foot pole, and as someone who sees the potential in this character and wishes there was just a little more to him than there is currently, I believe he deserves...something. If GIBRALTAR can get a whole new perk attached to to his character, then so can little old Crypto. I’m starting to fall in love with this guy, and his little drone, and I felt this needed to be said because I care about his future in the meta game.
More important than making him more powerful, Crypto needs a buff or a major change so that he stays at least somewhat relevant. Respawn did a good job introducing Revenant because he is what the meta needed, but I feel like they only introduced Crypto because they needed another radar character. Which it did, but with the guise of diversity, practicality was sacrificed.
