When a mixtape game is started without a full queue, people get inserted into the game. The person joining the game in progress cannot leave without penalty and usually everyone on the team can, and does leave, because for them, there is no penalty. The person joining is usually forced to fight solo.
is there a setting that can prevent this on console?
Aldebera I'm afraid there are no settings to opt out of matches in-progress.
Ok well I guess I’ll find another game that allows me to play rather than watch a penalty timer.

To avoid JiP and the JiP leave penalty all you have to do is go to the menu where all game types are listed and simply never choose the one that says "mixtape."
Not the best idea since that is the only mode I play. I would rather arenas, but…
