Separate the original and competitive ranked modes

I can't see any possible ways to satisfy both kinds of players in one ranked mode.

Then why not make a new mode? Name it competitive or championship mode.

The most obvious problem is dividing the queue of ranked.

How about making the new mode limited-time? Like the rank ladder, 3 days on, 3 days off.

The original ranked mode is still 24/7, the main game mode to grind.

The new mode can be or should be insanely competitive. Drop zone, solo queue. They can try only the winning team gains points. It is more acceptable to reduce the difficulty than increase it later.

When the competitive mode isn't live, or you don't enjoy it, or let's say it requires solo queue but you're 3-stacking, you can still play the original ranked mode.

I prefer that the two modes be completely separate. Pred can still get to pred without playing the new mode. You don't have to grind both sides unless you want.

If no one queues the new mode, that means no one wants to be that serious in a video game, but I think there should be at least 1 mode for people who enjoy playing seriously.

Yes it might be risky. But it could also bring back some people.

The original ranked could reward more for kills. Bring back demotion protection so people won't worry about rank down. Fun and addictive, no need to be "healthy".

They keep failing to please everyone in one mode. Many people instantly quit when they reach diamond or master and play other games. It will still die in this way. They can try 1 to 2 days per week first.

  • My first gripe is with the way you use the word "competitive." If you ask me drop zones are for people who need their "competition" doled out to them in small, digestible doses, and the jump master system is for people who have mastered their patience, teamwork, and strategic thinking just as much as their mechanical and motion skills. That feels a lot more seriously competitive to me. But I quibble.

My second gripe is that asking for two separate ranked trios modes is a little bit like a Goldilocks thing. "This mode is too casual!" "This mode is too competitive!" "Ahhhhh, this mode is JUST RIGHT!" Where does that kind of fine tuning end? Every individual player gets their own private ranked mode tailored to their own desires where they can grind away... completely alone? It's already bad enough that ranked and unranked are diverging at all. It should, imo, be one game that plays exactly the same in either mode. In one you rank up or down, in the other you don't. How simple is that? And is simpler not generally better? Note how I phrased that question to beg the answer I'm looking for?

Third gripe: as someone else already said, the population is currently too low to support viable skill-based matchmaking in any mode I've played this season. Ranked regularly gives me two-tier spreads, and that's just players' current visible ranks, not their true skill level, which is often much, much higher. And trios is generally single bucket matches, meaning roughly bronze to diamond or even master. When I get lucky it manages two buckets, which is still too wide by a gigantic margin, but better than rookie-to-pred. And it tries to justify these matches by outright lying to me about my mmr, as if to justify putting me in matches with anyone on the right side of the skill curve. It's pretty tragic. Already. More playlists is throwing gas on the fire. Whatever benefit a player gets by being coddled into their preferred ranked mode, would be completely erased the moment they realize that the ludicrous skill gaps of the single mode are now obscene gaps in both of the separate modes. How satisfying could that kind of grind really be, drop zones or no?

You are right about the jump master system and "one game" when the matchmaking is doing great and people are being serious, but both are not for many seasons. And yes, population is important, I agree with that too.

My suggestion is not to support drop zone. It could be anything that satisfy people who want ranked to be more serious. We can discuss that but that has a lot to discuss. The argument of dropzone shows the desire from some players and the difficulty to satisfy both sides.

Respawn had been trying to tune it to satisfy more people but look how it is. Not to mention unranked, in one ranked mode there are two games. I would rather have 2 modes than 2 different rules in 1 mode. I worry about 2 things could happen that damage population and matchmaking. First, people who don't enjoy jump master system will stop grinding. Second, people who don't enjoy drop zone will quit after reaching diamond or smurf.

Even when there were no drop zone, some people quitted once they reached diamond, which also decrease the players in high rank and affect matchmaking.

The solution I want to reach is not completely remove one side of players from ranked mode but keep players playing and lure them to engage in the other mode.

I just can't stand the fact they want back to free for all drop ships.  I'm mid gold now and I'm just tired of hot drop after hot drop after hot drop losing RP.  I have not touched it in awhile, zero desire to play that garbage.  I want to play smart and try to get RP.  Not drop in a clown show and have my survival almost entirely down to luck as to whether I manage to pick anything up or not.

If you're in the drop ship and your jump master goes and you can see he's headed for... streamer building or wherever it is you know with certainty is a suicide run... then why not break off and drop as close to the edge as you can and survive as long as you can? Grind your way up like that and maybe, just maybe, you'll get to whatever rank it is where jump masters stop behaving like idiots? I know that's not the way most people envision playing the game, but if you can't find a stack of like-minded teammates, then what have you got to lose? Another hot drop, early death, and inevitable rp loss? Who knows, you might even get the chance to get your dead teammates out of a replicator and back in the game.

Yeah, I know, it's not the most glamorous way to play the game, but it's what I do and sometimes it even works. The respawning part, I mean. The cold drop with stealth survival mode will get you to top five every time. At least until you get to platinum.

    Food for thought.

  • Believe me I had a very similar suggestion I posted on here not that long ago. I don't see it happening, most players are hardwired to play the way the play. Sadly, we don't get an outlet for our ALGS fantasies of crazy endgames with 15 squads' alive round 5 or heck even like when we had with the POIs getting 10 or so squads round 4.  The player base wants to push everything or they lose interest, sorry I wasn't trying to generalize but the Devs themselves said the numbers for ranked were declining since the POIs. The best we have is once you hit Diamond you get POIs and that's better than nothing, I guess. A separate mode more focused on Competitive would be dope for players like me but unfortunately, it's an opinion of the minority and player retention for Devs and more importantly shareholders is top priority.
