Why I Don't Like An (Only) 30 Sec Buy Phase In Arena

Now, I already know some people will disagree with this (and probably call me a string of colorful names, if my Twitter replies are to be any indication). But, honestly, as the way things stand, I don't like having only 30 seconds for this.

First, I'm sure part of the issue for me is being a controller user and just the menu set up, in general. With so many different things in Apex (all the weapons, scopes, grenades, heals, etc), just trying to navigate it all with a stick doesn't feel great.

Second, there is actually figuring out what to buy from a personal standpoint. Now, unless I'm just being to be like "I have a challenge with this weapon" or "I want to play that weapon, just for fun", it does take a bit to figure out what I should do. Obviously, every gun/gun type excels at different things. I would prefer not putting myself in a situation where I'm trying to "snipe" with an R-99 or close range battle with a long bow. Then, there is also the factor of what heals, grenades, abilities I want to buy, and how heavily I should invest in them.

Third, then there is factoring in what your (in my case, usually random) teammates want/plan to do. I can't speak for other platforms or people, but I find rarely anyone talks in voice on Xbox (At least usually not anything constructive) and I guarantee you no one is typing out a plan on Console in less than 30 seconds (lol). So, all I really have to go by is that little preview screen and that's not a lot.

Fourth, there is the factor of "course correction" and selling. Sometimes I might over spend on something or maybe see a teammate changed their mind and went from an SMG to a Sniper. In both situations, I may need to sell some things and try to figure out where to "reinvest" my materials.

With all of these factors, 30 seconds just doesn't feel like a lot sometimes. And Arenas feel less like "play how you want to play"/"Play in a way that is best for you and your team" and more like trying to pick your loadout out of a Loba Ult, while you are being shot at by an enemy team. It feels like a lot of pressure and I feel rushed (but maybe thats supposed to be the point, I don't know).

So, well, there you have it. My thoughts on this. And while I know many people will disagree with me, I just feel it was worth being said. Also, for anyone who wants to bring up Valorant or CS:GO, to be honest, those are moot points for me. I don't play on PC and I don't play with a KB&M, so I really couldn't care less what they do in those games. I'm talking about Apex Arena and my experience with it. Well, part of it.

Anyway, thanks for reading

  • @JonStriker126 30 seconds is too much for me as a PC m/k player. I spend between 10-15 seconds just punching the energy wall in my base getting bored and waiting for it to drop.

Yeah, I could totally see that as an M&KB user. Honestly, I think a big part of it is just the layout and interface as a controller user. Unless you have the menu cursor at full blast, it feels clunky navigating the interface. And in my experience, because stick isn't as precise, if you just crank up the cursor sensitivity then it's hard to make more precise movements on smaller icons, like the scopes.

So, between that and not really knowing what people want to do is just doesn't feel great. We I've said before, I feel rushed at times and I just end up frantically picking things, unless I have a specific challenge to do or something.

Maybe that feeling and stuff will get better with time, but right now it kind of sucks
  • @JonStriker126 I think what we need are quick loadouts. These would be setups you can create in advance that always have the same cost. Plus this would give us the opportunity to practice the menu outside of a match. I think as we get used to using the system we will get faster.

Yeah. I think some thing like that would help a lot. I could end up getting everything I need in a couple clicks. Instead of trying to manually pick each gun, upgrade each of them, pick a scope, etc.
