Apex Cross progression unable to link accounts

I have had two accounts for Apex Legends. One steam account and another on EA. I cannot link the account anymore as I get this error 

"Your accounts can’t be linked because the EA Account for *******@mail.com was previously linked to the Steam account for *****. An EA Account can only be linked to one Steam account in its lifetime."

I did this by a mistake ages ago, and recently heard that Apex will add cross progression and that motivated me to play the game again as I could combine two of my accounts together.

So is this possible in my situation or should I just not bother and try to pick up the game again?.
