When the target is painted, an M5 user can lock on using a similar mechanic to Stinger users. The missile lock will persist for a short time, even if SOFLAM lock is temporarily lost.
SOFLAM + M5 is also a one-hit kill on Nightbirds, Apaches and Super-Hokums. This makes the SOFLAM a proper teamplayer gadget, in my opinion, especially since you don't get a kill assist on the vehicle at all and only get kill assists on players if the pilot of the vehicle is still spotted.
I still love it - it's a proper squad tool when you're in voice chat with your squadmates. DICE we need VOIP!
I think the SOFLAM might also allow TOWs on Boltes and other vehicles to lock, although I haven't tested this personally and don't know for sure.
- @filthy_vegans Me and a friend have tried this before. He was using the SOFLAM and me the M5. But my M5 even though when locked on and fired wouldn't track the Nightbird. It was just fire and forget. Maybe I was doing it wrong.

Maybe I was doing it wrong.Both players need to hear the lock tone. If you lose the lock tone at any time on either end, the M5 will behave like a dumbfire.
I think it's a display bug - for me, the SOFLAM will occasionally lose lock, although no flares are visible. What I think happens is that the painted vechicle has actually dropped flares, but this is not shown on your screen.
Both players need to have the lock tone for the M5 to track the painted target.
I'd log in and make a short video showing what I mean (with Discord voice recorded - that's the key for coordinating it), but my main 2042 squadmate is away being less than manly and spending time with his girlfriend. Col. 100 obviously disapproves.
