@CloudMcRip You think Dice are making two sets of maps for these games? These games as its a cross gen game, only difference is player count and map size. I don't see EA spending money having to make 2 versions of every bit of content going forward, do you?
PS3 >PS4 couldn't have worked as its different architecture in BF4 case, On Xbox BF 2042 will be a Direct X game same libraries, PS4 and PS5 will be open GL or w/e form of it Sony uses. Its not the same as past BF4 to compare.
Just to put this out here if a game runs on Xbox it runs on ANY Xbox. its got 1 tool set lol
Why are EA holding it back for their Gold version when CoD Vanguard crossgen bundle is £70 This is just for money nothing else.
I can't say how "decreasing" of maps or playable areas will reflect the last gen experience.
As far as I know playable areas are reduced, in the best case the developers had just to decrease and re-adjust the playable sectors but in the worst case they had to re-edit maps and may had to remove unneassary details like specific "trees" , less "vegetation" et cetera.
The main differences between console generations is that we’ve made adjustments to the playable area on the maps to ensure a fluid play experience for Xbox One and PlayStation®4 consoles.

From "charlieintel" who quote from a "pre-launch presentation" they are refering that the last gen version will be some sort of "downgraded" version.
During a pre-launch presentation with DICE and EA, the developers confirmed that the game was built with next-gen players in mind, with 128 players on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

It is easy to say they do it in case of greed and I also think with more time and resources it would be possible to change it however, the decision is probably done month's ago and here we are now. I think if they want to add the possibility to play native from current generation to last generation, they had probably to edit the User Interfaces, building up extra function to search or filter out last generation server and also extra code the possibility to do so.
So the way they are going now, to built on the backwards compatibility feature and leave on it, doesn't sounds right for the consumer however it makes on an economical way sense and will raise more money with less work.
