I know this post is old, but for anyone else experiencing weird behavior like this, for me the fix was to replace my CPU. I had an Intel i7-13700KF CPU that was damaged by the Intel microcode error that was revealed in 2024. RMAing and replacing the CPU completely fixed my BF2042 problem (and some other random software problems also caused by the damaged CPU).
