I tried most things but taking the disc out and deleting the game worked at a cost of the saved game showing as corrupted. It was only when the update showed up did I have a problem. So despite the fact that the forum said I would have no issue with saves....this was incorrect, but at least i have a playable game.
Updates will be turned off from now on as this is not the first time that updates has caused a problem. Offline for me from now on.
