"Time Nudge" is making the game unplayable (PC Help needed)

Is anyone else having issues with "Time Nudge (TN)"? It's causing constant variable lag of up to 1500ms in my matches especially when I'm around enemies. This is not to be confused with network latency, of which that is usually at a solid 10-15ms.

My specs are RTX 3080, AMD 5900x, DDR4 32GB RAM @ 3200MT/s. I use an ethernet cable and have rock solid gigabit internet

Currently I have to run the game at all low settings and run at 1440p in addition to DLSS set to balanced just to reduce TN to reasonable levels. Usually, I can run games at 4K high graphics at around 60 FPS so I'm really at a loss here. I've read some forums saying RAM clock speeds or weak CPUs can be an issue but my clock speeds are fine (I use XMP as well) and my CPU is definitely not weak nor has either been an issue with any other game before besides some natural bottlenecking. I play VR games like iRacing and DCS, which are way more CPU demanding, and have no issues running them. Any help would be massively appreciated; I just want to play the game reasonably well.

Little .cfg file that supposedly tells the game your CPU spec or something.  Didn't work for me, but I've seen threads where it has worked.

For a simple text file, can't harm. If it doesn't work, just delete the file.

FrodoEsquire thank you for posting screenshots, they are very helpful.

A framerate below 60fps on Official servers will cause time nudge (TN) to spike. If time nudge (TN) spikes it will cause network lag. A framerate below 60fps is what's causing the network lag.

You can read more about time nudge (TN) in the link below.

High TN/slowmo/skating inconsistency issue on official servers | EA Forums - 12740587

The FPS performance graphs in the two screenshots above are showing the GPU maxed out with a framerate of 25fps.

The GPU appears to be rendering at 3840x2160 native 4k resolution without any DLSS upscaling. This would explain why the GPU is maxed out, because it's rendering at native 4k resolution!

If DLSS was working, the information bar at the top of the screen with green text would say 'Scaled from: 2227x1253'.

I suggest getting the GPU framerate over 60fps by lowering the graphics settings and using DLSS.

After you get the GPU performance over 60fps we can work on the CPU performance by disabling simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) and checking if you have a custom user.cfg . If you do have a custom user.cfg then disable it.

  • Ive had this issue since the beta. Game works well in custom browsing servers (smaller player count and USA servers) on big maps matchmaking the game is unplayable

Hey OskooI_007 See below. If the images look weird I run the game with HDR, I know it affects videos, not sure about screenshots.

The TN fluctuates wildly second to second. It definitely happens most when I'm alive and close to enemies, so the timing of the screenshots are somewhat hard to get. The first screenshot is using a bit more VRAM because I was using Auto (balanced) before then changed it to Auto (performance). The rest of the screenshots are with performance. I have also tried with fixed low - medium - high settings and besides low and running at a mucher lower render res, the TN is still a big issue. I also tried with/without Vsync, reflex, DLSS, HDR, etc. and it had no effect. It also seems to be worse on some maps more than others.

Community servers work well, I heard the lower tick rate helps with whatever issue is causing this. The limited FPS and reducing graphics works but I have to go all the way down and it looks pretty ugly haha.

What do you mean by CPU config file?

Hey Frodo, I'm the same. There is quite a few others as well, and the specs of devices are wide ranging from low tonight. EA has responded to a couple of threads on here asking for more feedback and that they are investigating. But nothing solid back yet.

Some potential fixes for a few (none have worked for me) are:

    • XMP as you said,
    • Running dual channel,
    • CPU config file
    • Limiting frame rate and reducing graphics

Only thing that I can do at the moment is play the community servers. If you can sift through the "xp farms" you'll find some decent conquest/breakthrough/hardcore servers that still give full XP and progression, all without the TN issue.

Would be nice if we could favourite servers so we didn't have to sift through each time, or have filters that actually work. Tip from me is changing the filter to show full servers, they are usually the decent ones and you only have a queue of 1 or 2 for a minute or so.

  • I'm running at 4k high-ultra @ 60FPS in the campaign right now. If I'm in a solo lobby in multiplayer I can do the same, just as soon as I'm around others, especially lots of enemies online my TN starts tanking.
