It goes straight to black screen upon loading. I can hear sound as the message appears onscreen "no signal", same as when the hdmi cable is pulled from either the card or the tv.
There are only 2 drivers for the HD 6870. One is whql while the other is beta. Same issue with either driver.
Is there a way to force windowed mode as the game freezes before I can try ingame.
Hello @DreamLord41
Can you try to turn off Origin in-game option for Battlefield 3? You should also disable this option in general Origin client settings. Let me know how it goes.

There may be something to that. I disabled it in origin itself but couldn't find it in game. But started a game anyways and it went to the no signal thing with sound. I unplugged the hdmi & plugged it back in & the game worked fine til it crashed with the event viewer entry of "bf3.exe stopped interacting with windows & was closed".
For that part, I think I just need to fiddle with the graphics.

Ok, that may have resolved that. But now I have a weird issue. I can play for a bit then the video stops but sound continues on as if nothing was wrong.
Any ideas?

Hello @DreamLord41
Are you experiencing the same issue in both single and multiplayer game modes? It seems like a GPU related issue, maybe an older version of the GPU drivers can solve this?
Keep me posted on this.

Have not tried MP as I don't play MP.
Another issue that pops up, is that I'll be playing and then the screen changes to that "no signal" message as if I unplugged the video card.
Crysis now works fine. So don't think it's a gpu issue.

Ok, game is still crashing. No ideas as to why either.
The video portion is crashing yet I can still interact with the game as I can hear my tank move, the machinegun fire etc.
I made it up to Thunder Run, the part with the tanks. Game crashes within seconds of loading now. Doesn't matter if card is set to defaults, overclocked or underclocked.
One crash somehow caused 2 different dx errors at the exact same time. Never seen that happen.

Hello @DreamLord41
Can you try to load your game with the Clean Boot and run the game? Maybe some third-party software causes your game to crash.
Cheers,
