Dim and washed out HDR - Battlefield 1

Broadly, my issue is that in Battlefield 1 the HDR signal gives a dim and washed out look. I can see that there is a greater breadth to contrast and specular highlights and so on, but colours appear washed out and dull. To make matters more confusing, other games (like Far Cry 5 and Mass Effect: Andromedadisplay HDR content perfectly - they are bright, colourful and display great contrast. This is further confirmed by the fact that when I run MSI afterburner overlay on BF1, the overlay is dim, and on the games that work correctly, the overlay is bright and punchy. Also, when I bring up the Origin overlay it's also dimmed out during BF1 play.

My setup:

1080ti
i5-6600 (the non-k version)
16gb DDR3

I have two displays at home, an LG B7 OLED and a Samsung 27" CHG70. Both displays see exactly the same problem. I have used multiple different cables (good quality 2.0, purchased from my local Jaycar) and used both HDMI and display port for the Samsung. In terms of Nvidia colour settings I have tried outputting at 422, 420, 444, (at every available bitrate) and of course, RGB limited and full. I have also updated both the television and monitor to their latest firmware as well as installing the latest drivers for both displays and for my GPU.

Hope someone can offer advice as this is a really frustrating problem for me. My friend plays BF1 in HDR and doesn't report the same issues. Thanks in advance!

  • To add to this, I've found some people advising online that the only way to overcome this roadblock is to roll back to Nvidia driver 378.92, which is the last driver before the one compatible with the Windows 10 creators update (where the HDR toggle was introduced). Any thoughts on this? What are some of the pitfalls of rolling back your drivers?

I have the same problems with BF1.

On my Samsung c27hg70 which is rated for HDR 10 (600nits) the image in BF1 becomes washed-out grey. I coudn't find any solutions yet. Please post any workarounds you find. TY

Can you see if your model has the option to change the HDR modes, for example, can you set yours to HDR Vivid and HDR Standard and then compare the differences.

Game mode on the LG Oled with HDR can throw up some issues with certain games, best thing to do is try changing your settings if you see certain titles looking washed out as the issue is generally something that the TV is unable to handle.

  • Thanks for the response. This happens on both my displays so I am guessing this is a problem that originates in my PC and not one of the displays. While some do report 'dim' hdr in game mode on LG TVs, this is something else. It's not a lack of brightness, but an overall milky, or washed out, appearance to HDR content that's been affected. I suspect there is something wrong in the way windows is processing the HDR metadata outputted by BF1. Alas i'm not sure there's much more that can be done at this stage.

@antwandemarco Have you calibrated your screen input for HDR, if not and are plugged in your HDMI then it is worth taking a couple of hours to play around with your settings to get the best image possible, remember also that you may need to turn game mode on to get the most out of HDR gaming and also that what works for film viewing may not for gaming.

  • I am having the same issue. This doesn't happen with any other title I own. What is really strange is that when I go to windowed mode, the HDR setting is working perfectly on Battlefield 1. The second I go to full screen it immediately becomes dull. I cant imagine this an issue with my setup here since it's HDR is working in windowed.
