Ping issues/Same ping after upgrading my internet provider.

Soo this morning i upgraded my internet connection from 24mbps to 50mbps.Although i performed various tests on speedtest.net etc. i have come accross to this issue with my online games despite the fact that the internet is faster in general and i can download internet files from 1.5/2 mb/second(old connection) to 3-5mb/sec(new connection) and upload with 1mb/sec speed..
So at speedtest.net when i had 24mbps i could get 21.5mbps/24mbps downstream and 1mbps upstream and the ping on speedtest.net used to be around 50-60ms.Yet on the European servers that were available in battlefield i would get rarely 67ms and usually around 80-90 ms.
Now after the 50mbps upgrade on speedtest.net i get 47mbps/50mbps downstream and upstream is about 5-6mbps,also my ping is 29ms on speedtest.net but on online games such as BF4 i still get the exact same ping which is around 70ms rarely and usually around 80-90 ms.

My issue is that the online games such as BF4 still have the exact same ping i used to have,no matter what server location i choose. It's as if ididnt upgrade my internet at all considering my online games ping, which is 70+ on most battlefield 4 european servers.

p.s. my location is Greece.

  • If your internet provider updated your speed, but didn't change the path your data takes to get to EA servers, then you are still going through high traffic hosts to reach the game servers. You may need to talk to your ISP about going through different networks.

Try running a UOTrace to figure out what hosts are giving you the most trouble: http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-uo-trace/

  • Upgrading the speed of your internet does not lower the ping unless you use your entire connection which causes buffering. So, if the only thing using the internet is Battlefield your upgrade should not improve your ping. What really determines the ping can be simplified to 2 things:

    1. The length between you and your target, in this case you and the Battlefield 4 server you are playing on
    2. The technology involved between you and the target

The first one is simple, a signal takes more time from A to B depending on the length between the two.

The second one is more complicated. The most important is the technology used between you and your ISP's backbone - how many routers and switches do you have to go through? Are you connected to the Backbone using tv cables? telephone copper wiress? Fiber obtics?

So, if you upgraded your internet to get lower ping that might not have been the best idea, however it should not have lowered your ping either. When you test with speedtest.net make sure you are using the same server each time and that no and nothing other is using the connection. Also never game or test your Internet using a wireless connection.

  • Well.I am worried cause no matter what online game i play the ping is the same. For example i play dota 2 and my ping used to be 110-130 when my ping on speedtest.net used to be like 60ms.
Now my ping on speedtest.net is 26 ms,but the same game Dota 2 still has the exact ping 110-130ms.Other friends of mine that live in the same neighborhood and have 24mbps internet connections who get only like 18mbps/24mbps they can play dota 2 with a ping around 80-90ms.An internet cafe near my area can get 30-50ms in Dota 2 european servers.

My issue is that after upgrading my broadband, despite the fact that i can download videos/movies/internet files etc. almost 2.5x faster, and upload videos and photos 5x faster,i still can't get to improve my ping in online games.it remains exactly the same?
I tried installing dota 2 to a different pc with different connection(non-wirless of course) which downloaded really fast in about 5 minutes with 5mb/sec download speed, but when i enter the game and go to the select servers screen, the ping is still the same and in-game it's even higher than what the server's suggest.
I tried using speedtest.net to other servers throughout Europe. In my country's server i get 26 ms,in a couple of German servers i get about 70-80ms, in English servers about 80-90.the farthest server from my location i got 110ms. But in-game all of those servers have high ping and i dont think my ISP can help me out either, despite the fact that the commercials they had said that internet speeds and online games' speeds improve dramatically.

I am just confused how can i be able to upload/download faster but my online games' internet speeds are the same?

  • i don't see any open conversation on My conversations tab to assing those 2 files you recommended me to give you?

  • yeah but from what you said do you mean that my ping is supposed to stay high despite the fact that i upgraded my broadband connection and there is nothing i can do about it?

Ignore the part about adding it to "my conversations" and upload it somewhere and give us a link so we can see the results 🙂

Also, you might want to describe your network setup.

Well, the best time to level3 in Sofia you got which is the first stop outside your greek ISP takes an avg. ping of 46, so you should expect that as a minimum ping for everything outside Greece and as you can see it's an avg. ping of 71 to go to Frankfurt Germany. This is a little bit high, but probably quite normal, Greece is not known for it's quality Internet.

When you test using speedtest you probably use a greek server andas you can see you have a ping of avg. 27/28 in greece so agrees with the speedtest results.

So, a ping of 70-90 when you join servers in Germany is not far fetched and if you look for servers close to you should be able to find servers with 50 ping in your area.

All in all, your Internet seems to be working just fine. You seem to have a problem finding servers close to you but that seems to be all. I can't explain why other people have lower pings than you do, unless they have another internetprovider which uses a better technology like fiber.
