That worked oddly enough. I had the game's specific settings set to "High performance", and all my other games ran fine without the change, but changing the "global setting" to "High" instead of "Auto" made it work. Just tested that out and if it set to "auto" in "global" it wont start.

I don't have nvdia. I'm trying to play it on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. Intel Core i5-4300, 4.0GB Ram, Intel HD Graphics Family. 

It's probably a compatibility issue with Intel graphics.

Because when i switch to the onboard intel hd graphics on my laptop, i get the same error but when i force the game to work on my nvidia gpu it works fine

Tl;DR: if your only graphics option is onboard intel graphics then it seems you are out of luck

I don't get it. Doesn't every pc have 1 graphics card. How can you switch from Nvdia to Intel Graphics. Can I install Nvdia's drivers even though I dont have its card?

I had the same problem with the wrath, my solution is this. to start the game, i do a right click on the icone of the game and choose the nvidia video card (acer v15 nitro) because by default the game starts with the integrated intel graphics card.

now it works

the graphics that you come with is the integrated graphics card, theres only a handful of games that can support running with only the integrated graphics card, gaming laptops however have two graphics card, one is the integrated and the other one is only for gaming, the dedicated graphics card. the dedicated graphics card is the nvdia (example). 

so long story short, no. you cannot install nvdia's drivers even though you do not have its card, and if you already have a dedicated graphics card, you already have the integrated graphics card so there wouldnt be a point to switch between those two.

I'd like to say thank you so much!! After weeks of unhelpful forums that resulted in the same error, after doing what you said and when i open Kane's Wrath and saw the scorpion tale come together i flipped * and almost fell out my chair. You made my day!!

I have read through all of the tips and nothing worked.  but you just said that you got it to work.  what do you do?

Adding my name to the long list of people with this problem.  On Windows 10 with an i3-5010U (so Intel HD 5500 graphics) and the Ultimate Collection on Origin.

Have tried everything on this forum short of rolling back to Windows 8 which I'm not willing to do as I last played C&C3 on my old Windows 7 laptop that doesn't work anymore.

Rolled back drivers; updated drivers; messed about with colour / resolution / compatibility settings; turned off origin; updated the launcher.  None of these things stop it saying "exception in exception handler" when I try to start C&C3 or KW.

this clearly is an issue with the Intel HD graphics driver. No matter which Windows version.

As long as Intel doesn't do anything about it, we will be out of luck.

I worked around by creating a Vmware virtual machine, put Windows 7 on it, and the game runs like a charm.

Vmware brings its own virtual graphics driver, that's why this solution actually works.

Depending on the performance of your hardware, you can run the game with more or less reduced graphics settings.

Couldn't get it to run in a Virtual Box virtual machine, though.

This makes no sense.  Kane's Wrath worked perfectly on my old laptop, which has an intel graphics card.  It was a relatively cheap laptop too, much worse than my current one yet now I can't play.  RIP Kane's Wrath...

Thanks for the suggestion lihar1. I had the same issue with an NVIDIA Quadro graphics card on Windows 10. For some reason, per default C&C3KW chooses the Intel HD graphics card an it will crash before running the game. Doing as you suggest (choosing to use the NVIDIA graphics card per default in the NVIDIA Control Panel) solves the problem :-)
