Re: Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour You have encountered a serious error

@IDashTi860Can you describe the exact problem and error to me and tell me when you encounter this problem. Also, do you have The Ultimate Collection version or a CD-disk version of Zero Hour? Did you install any (community-made) modifications or mods to the game? Which OS are you running? Please answer all these questions in detail so I can help you.

  • @mrtnptrsthe error says you encountered a serious error. serious errors can be caused by many things including viruses, overheated hardware and hardware that does not meet the minimum specifications for the game...

and my os build is 18363.657

i encountered this since i bought the ultimate collection from origin

@IDashTi860That is really strange as those steps from the PCGamingwiki really resolve always all instances of a Serious Error with Generals or Zero Hour. You're 100% sure you followed all those steps and didn't skip one? You're sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date? You made sure the game runs with the dedicated graphics card from either AMD or NVidia instead of the crappy Intel HD-chip? (Can be done through the NVidia control panel for example)

  • @mrtnptrs just finished the drivers update and ran the game and still didn't work.
i uninstalled and reinstalled the game but nothing worked for me.

@IDashTi860 Please give me a list with everything you tried so far to fix this problem. Please leave nothing out.
  • @mrtnptrsall the things i tried
    1-uninstalling and reinstalling generals.
    2-updated graphics drivers.
    3-replacing options.ini
    4-using command prompt.
5-running the game in compatibility mode (windows xp service pack 2&3)
    6-running the game as administrator.

7-tried to run the game on reduced color mode.
i'v done more before but i don't remember anything.

@IDashTi860 Did you also undo these fixes after they didn't work? As some of them can also cause problems. What do you mean with "using command prompt"?
  • yes i did.and i was trying a solution and one of the steps was using command prompt.

the command was. sc config secdrv= auto

@IDashTi860That is the command to get SecuROM/Drive DRM working again, but that isn't available on Windows 10 + it is only needed for the disk versions. You have the digital Origin release, so that command is not needed. Please type whole good sentences as that makes your messages easier to read.

What I would maybe like to do is to take a look at your problem myself through Teamviewer. I'm not affiliated with EA or something, so, would you want me to take a look at it to fix the problem directly myself? Because, assuming you did everything I said correctly, I'm out of ideas honestly.... So, maybe you did miss something or did something wrong that I could do better 🙂

@DarKbzalya Your video instructs people to unsafely download an illegal non-supported version of Generals, which often suffer from issues. This is also not allowed on this forum. I would strongly advice @IDashTi860 to not follow those steps in the video! Edit: I see the post luckily got already removed

  • @mrtnptrsi did everything possible to fix this game but nothing worked so if you have other solutions than teamviewer it will be great.

@DarKbzalyaIt's ok 🙂 I'm not angry at you or something.... *Send Dr. Thrax after you... :P*

@IDashTi860Please send a private message to me on this forum so we can talk about when you're available tomorrow to let me look at it 🙂 Please send met which country you're living in and the time you will be available tomorrow 🙂 Please make sure to set your Windowss-language to English so I can actually read things haha

  • @mrtnptrsi don't want to use teamviewer. if you have any other solutions that will be grateful. honestly you helped me so much 🙂

@IDashTi860 Well, I'm not familiar with other tools like Teamviewer. You mean you want me to look at it through another tool or do you just want me to advice you through this forum?
  • @mrtnptrs i don't know about these kinds of tools like teamviewer i had never tried it so i don't wan't to use it. if you can give me solutions with steps then i will try it out. if you don't have any solution then i can wait for any new fixes or solutions for the game 🙂

@IDashTi860Ok, Teamviewer is a worldwide known solution to let anyone look at a computer over a distance by giving them a username and password of Teamviewer. And I could then only look once at your PC with only your authorization. But I gave you all solutions that are really available, so I suspect that you applied one of them incorrectly by accident. So, yeah, I'm out of ideas then; maybe someone else comes with a new idea, but I wouldn't bet any money on it... Good luck with it 🙂

@IDashTi860 Ok haha, I didn't read that you didn't want to use Teamviewer right after I asked you about it. Haha, that's why I asked when you had time... Haha, now it sounded like I was pushing you to let me look at it directly through Teamviewer. I didn't mean to push you of course 🙂

The error message is pretty unhelpful and the popup suggests lots of things that might be a problem that sends you off on a rabbit hunt.

I have just resolved one reason, it seems that this might have caused the serious error with the Ultimate collection. It didn't affect the Generals version, just Zero hour so I followed up the error message generated. The serious error was shown in my Documents folder in a sub folder called 'Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data'. The problem was with a .ini file that had been created when a 3rd part map had been played, it seems.

Initially I just moved the mapcache.ini file into a folder out of the way (I called it Temp to be able to return it later should I need to) and VOILA! Problem solved and C&C Generals Zero Hour was back up and running.

Hope anybody else with a 'serious error' popup gets to see this and try it, 'cos it was a really quick fix.
