PC Performance Degradation

Adding an additional report to the PC performance concerns being documented here.

Observed issue: framerate and frametime performance degrades rapidly from an acceptable state of high performance to single-digit framerates, to eventual DXGI crashes if the game is left over a period of minutes in this low performance state. This process seems less related to time and more related to asset loads; if the game is loaded and left to idle, the framerate remains high.

Repeatable: yes, load the game and begin actively playing. As assets are streamed, performance rapidly degrades.

Attachments: I'm attaching a few files - a couple of timestamped screenshots indicating no idle performance degradation and a dxdiag for my PC. I also have a recording of the performance degradation in action which you can find here: https://clipchamp.com/watch/SHUQ8Otlg5q

  • Frequently dipping down to single digit frames in traversal, I have tried running on all different settings, nothing is helping. attaching a DxDiag as requested in other posts.

  • I have the game installed on an M2 drive and have gone through every possible video setting. I was having random stutter hang ups after about 20 minutes where I had to exit and reload the game for the stuttering to go away, but I'm currently at the save where you're instructed to go back to the Kellion and when I board the Kellion and it tells me to run the ship diagnostic, it immediately drops to single frames and it will not recover, making it completely unplayable. CPU load is completely fine. GPU load is 100%. This is post-patch today (Steam).

    EVGA RTX 3080

    Ryzen 5 3800x

    32GB RAM 3200mhz

    OLED 4K HDR

DXDiag attached. Thank you for the help, devs.

  • This game was butter smooth on my PC with the release version, but not after the Jan 30th, 2023 Update.  As soon as the update occurred the game is now in an permanent unplayable state.

Just trying to load the game takes 3-5 minutes forever, even the initial game load now stutters heavily, even on initial game load just to the menu and can take minutes to reach the main menu which is not responsive at all and takes 2-3 mouse clicks just to get the game to respond to inputs.

What happened? And has anyone seen this? If so what did you do to fix this?

    Troubleshooting Steps:
    - Restarted my computer, No improvement.
    - Try a different game, smooth as butter so the issue is specific to this game and not my machine as a whole.
    - Update to the latest version of GeForce Experience, no improvement.
    - Running the latest GeForce driver on my GeForce 3800, no improvement.
    - The issue is not with my computer or my Steam.

    Result:

Something in the latest patch totally broke my ability to play. Now I have to spend hours wading through various settings in the hopes of resolving what the patch broke in my game.

This is on a 8 Core Intel I-9 with 32GB of RAM, Nvidia 3800 GPU, and an 2TB SSD.

  • This did help me somewhat - Posting as a possible clue.

1: Go to C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Dead Space (2023)\cache. It could also be C:\Users\YOURNAME\OneDrive\Documents\Dead Space (2023)\cache if you use OneDrive..

2: Delete everything that's in the "Cache" folder
3: Start the game up and don't touch any key, let it do the shader compilation again. It may not tell you but if you use Window's Resource Monitor (RESMON) on the Overview section if you expand the disk section you will see it heavily hitting the Shader Cache folder.  This could take 5-10 minutes.

    4. If it has improved but still a bit laggy, go into Dead Space 2023 game and turn motion blur off.  This helped even more.

For whatever reason the game after the update is heavy stuttering either due to Shader Recompilation due to not telling us after the update, or by forcing it to rebuild the cache it does appear to help.

Wait to change any of the in-game settings after the initial shader compilation the game will have stutters, even in the in-game menu.

  • I have identified the cause: HDR enabled in game. I have a LG C1 display, using HDR via Windows 11. When HDR is enabled, it is as you've seen in my previous post. If I disable HDR in game and turn it off in Windows, no issues.

That's going to need a fix on the game side.

  • Embarrassingly, I posted to soon. While this over doubled the time before degradation, it did eventually happen. This is not a fix.
