DirectX "FindClosestMatchingMode" failed -- can't start game

Hello,

I recently reinstalled and am trying to play DA:I after a couple years away from the game. Since I last played I have a different graphics card but otherwise it worked fine in the past and I didn't expect it to be so difficult to get the game working again.

When I launch the game (through Origin, through GeForce or straight from the .exe as administrator) I get this error:

My processor is an intel i5 and my card is a GTX 1050, I have 8G Ram and this game has never presented me an issue before.

I did play with mods last time I was active with the game but they were not installed when I tried to launch it this time.

I have tried:

- Running both Origin and DAI as administrator

- Reinstalling graphics card driver

- Reinstalling game & deleting the preferences file

- Making sure it is allowed through my antivirus (Avast)

- Restarting the computer at each step

And so far nothing has fixed it. I am flummoxed and really just want to play Dragon Age. ☹️ Any advice would be super appreciated.

Here is my DxDiag output as well.

  • There was a similar issue in Mass Effect Andromeda, which runs on the same engine.

The workaround is to play the game in bordlerless window mode. Since you can't start the game, you'll have to edit the config file manually.

The file is in the save folder, which by default is in Documents - BioWare - Dragon Age Inquisition - Save. Open the file called ProfileOptions_profile with your favorite text editor (I recommend notepad++ or WordPad over the standard Notepad).

Look for the line GstRender.FullscreenMode 0 and set it to 2. Save and launch the game.

Was it a clean installation of the graphics driver? I hear the problelm can be caused by Windows automatically installing a driver on top of the one you manually installed. If that's the case, a clean driver installation might be a more permanent solution.

To do this, download DDU from the Wagnardsoft website. Reboot your PC in safe mode, then run DDU to get rid of your installed drivers and reboot the PC in standard mode. Finally, download and install the latest driver.
