I had this issue very persistently. The only thing that resolved it was when I did two things, a verify of the game files, and lowered Ambient Occlusion from HBAO to SSAO. I believe the latter is what did it, other people in other threads said this stopped it for them as well. I haven't had a restart in the past about 5 hours of gameplay when they used to happen every 10 minutes.
Running a GTX 970 and had this issue during the closing of breach segments - desire demon (ice ray and quicly moving) seemed to cause the black screen. Took Darthus advice and I went from ultra to high and to SSAO - no more black screen. At some point I will test ultra with SSAO to see if it is just HBAO that is causing the issue.
update - tried ultra + SSAO which = crash. High and SSAO seems to be the solution
Same here. Black screen or reboot when using EVGA 970gtx SC.
No issues in other games except for Dragon Age. Setting the power limit to 95% fixes the issue. Not a PSU issue, tested with a new 600w. Reducing settings help but does not make it go away. For example playing in 1080p instead of 1440p, playing in high rather then ultra etc.
Best place to test and replicate this issue 100% of the time is at the The Fade quest. When in the fade there is a blocked passage that requires you to fight of emenies till the timer runs to zero.
Want to add that when running a 670gtx on the same computer, zero issues in 30 hours of game play.
