Dragon Age Origins texture issues.

I am having an issue with the texture setting. If I set it at anything other than low, I get these weird, blacked-out textures on my character's skin as shown in the attached picture with no armor on. Is there a fix for this?

Also, the game crashes on the high setting a lot.

  • Do you get the issue only when wearing a mod outfit, or on all armor? In any case, try temporarily disabling mods to see if the issue goes away. If you have more than one mod, you can start reactivating them to see if the issue returns. That way you know which mod is causing the issue.

I also see in your dxdiag that you have both a dedicated Nvidia graphics card and an integrated Intel chipset. Some PCs (mostly laptops) will use the Intel chipset most of the time to save power, then switch to the Nvidia GPU when you launch a game. This doesn't always happen, however, which means you sometimes play games on integrated graphics instead of your dedicated graphics card.

Open the Nvidia control panel, go to 'manage 3D settings', open the 'program settings' tab and select Dragon Age Origins from the list (or add it to the list by browsing for the executable file). Then make sure the 'high performance NVIDIA processor' is used as its default device. If this is not clear enough, there's a more detailed guide on this League of Legends forum. Just change the references to League of Legends to Dragon Age in your head. 😉

Yep, thanks in advance! I tried to disconnect from the internet and up until a point it seemed to work, but now after some hours it starts by displaying weird body and building textures and then sometime after that it crashes, FYI. Tried to do your way mentioned in the first page but again as I said there is no option of using the high power nvidia processor or whatever it is called.

In your case that's normal, judging by the dxdiag file. You don't have integrated graphics, so the PC will always use the Nvidia GPU.

Nothing jumps out immediately. Do you have any mods installed? Those could affect how textures are displayed.

The first think you should try is repairing the game. If you have the game in Origin, right click it in your library and click on the repair game option. If you have it on Steam, right click the game, go to properties, then local files, and click 'verify integrity of game files'.

Common crashes can sometimes be fixed by forcing the CPU to run on fewer cores. (Though this may lower game performance.) To do that:

    1. Start the game
    2. Press ctrl + shift + esc
    3. Right click DAOrigins.exe in the list and go to details
    4. In the details menu, right click DAOrigins.exe and then 'set affinity'
    5. Uncheck everything except for 1 core
    6. Continue playing the game and hope it works.

If this stops the crashing, you can make the affinity workaround permanent, but that takes more work. Here's a guide. This applies to the Steam version, but you can do this with other versions too. You just need to find the game's executable file wherever you installed it.

So, I did everything, including the 1 core thing (crashing the moment it entered in the game after loading, so 1-core solution was a no-no). No mods, pure vanilla and im running in Origin. Out of desperation I lowered the graphics and it worked for some time. It started doing the same thing, meaning the textures were going bad (almost always happens in Denerim market and inside the taverns especially). For some reason I lowered anisotropic as low as possible and the game worked perfectly without any problems. I will try to improve the graphics again without increasing anisotropic and see how it behaves, for now i have everything on low. The only solution I havent tried yet and I hope I wont have to use, is the compatibility mode with SP2 or 3. Will keep posted if I see another guy encountering the same problem.

  • HI I'm having the same problem, off textures on NPCs clothes. Have it set to high performance NVIDIA processor and repaired it in Origin but its still happening.

I only have the one Mod: Extra Dog Slot. I'm relatively new to PC gaming (only in the last year) so I really have no idea how to address this. I'm playing on a laptop Acer Predator Helios 300, which works well for most games (Total War & Baldur's Gate 3).

  • I tried the Nvidia suggestion and now I can no longer load my game.  I did a hard save before trying this, in front of the chantry person with the every changing robe textures.  I get as far as the load screen with the fun facts/lore to read and it CTD midway every time.

  • This is on the older side of time, I'm closing this thread to stop it from being necroed.

If you have any issues with Dragon Age please make a new topic about your problems and what kind of steps you have tried to solve them.
