EA Desktop App - Unable to Install - "Unable to install to the Orgin Folder"

I am attempting to download and install EA Play games off of the Xbox app with my Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.  However, the Xbox App informs me I need to download and install the EA App.  This prompts a download of the EA App and when I click "Let's Go" to start the installation of the EA App, i get the error message "Unable to install to the Orgin folder."

I tried going directly to the EA website (https://www.ea.com/ea-app-beta) to download and install the EA App and I still get the same error message.  I also verified my Xbox Live Gamertag is linked to my EA Account (as well as my Steam).

I have also tried restarting my computer, restarting my router, and ensuring I don't already have the EA App (or even Orgin) installed.

I have a case open with EA Help, but I have had 3 different people ask me if I have access to my email address on my account, which I verified I do.  I am not sure what this has to do with anything, but it has been a week with no resolution and going in circles.

Has anyone experienced this error message before and know how to resolve it?

Thanks!

  • Hi @ChiClutch Thanks for this information, we may be running into an issue with the Beta Client. To confirm is there another drive outside of C to try to install to? (if not or if we get the same error) trying a Clean Boot or making a new local Admin account and seeing if either allows the client to install would be the next step.

Hi @ChiClutch Thanks for sharing what your seeing with the community, can you try going through the following and let us know if you continue getting this message?

    • Run the installer as an Administrator
    • Change UAC Controls
    • Allow the installer through security software or temporarily disabling then run the installer
    • Run the System File Checker toolthen Check for Windows and GPU updates (then run the installer)
  • Thanks for reaching out @EA_Illium

    • Ran the installer as an Administrator, still receiving the above error message
    • UAC is on "Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default)", is there a different level it should be on?
    • I turned off the Windows Defender and attempted to run the installer as an Administrator, still receiving the above error message
    • Ran the System File Checker tool and checked for Windows and GPU updates.
      • The SFC tool completed the restore operation successfully
      • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
    • There were Windows Updates, I applied the updates and restarted the computer
    • There was a GPU driver update available through GeForce Experience, I applied the update and restarted the computer

After doing the above I ran the installer as an Administrator and still received the above error message.

Hi @ChiClutch Thanks for going through those steps, To check do you get to a point to select an install location before the message pops up? Also, do you play an EA game from Steam or Epic Game Store at all?

If not can you try putting your device in a Clean Boot and run the installer?

  • @EA_Illium, yes I do.  Attached are screenshots of the installer when I first run as Administrator, the screen which allows me to change the install location, and finally the error message again after I click "Let's Go!".

I am able to play EA games via Steam, specifically Squadrons.  I tested this again today where Squadrons successfully ran when launched through Steam.  It did not require the EA Desktop App to play.

Is there something else I should try first before I attempt a Clean Boot?

  • @EA_IlliumI was able to successfully install to a different drive running the client installer as an Administrator.  Still unsure why the C drive doesn't work, haven't tried a clean boot but I can always try that at a future time if I run into issues.  Thanks for the suggestions and helping me resolve this issue.
