I had to completely remove Origin, EA APP and BF2042 then do a registry clean as well as remove BF2042 in My Documents, download EA APP and install BF2042 with EA APP to get it to work right. I don't have it on Steam though.

I was having no start issues and no EAC splash screen.

Someone with the Steam version might be able to help you more.
