I was finally able to update by restarting the app. I went to the 3 lines in the top left corner > help > restart app. Once it restarted I pressed the play button on the sidebar to continue downloading the update and got the 20GB error message. Then I tried clicking on the actual game instead of the play button and it finally let me update. I only had 2GB of storage space on my computer. This is definitely just a really annoying bug.
Unless I did something wrong, this did not work for me.
