On every platform I tend to sort things by most recent, so that when I visit a thread I read before, new replies are on the top. This favours anything new, whether a user is popular or not, which I think is the most equitable.
It makes no sense to sort by most recent if you want to read a thread like a sims story where posts should be read in chronological order. It's also difficult to follow discussions, because you have the newest reply on top and whatever sparked the discussion at the very bottom so you need to scroll down and then read from bottom to top.
