The Sims Community is Different

Okay, I’m not going to post about the glitches, missing features, and other problems in the forum itself. We all know what those are.  I would just like to amplify something that maybe needs to be taken more seriously by those who decide these things, and that is this: the Sims game is completely different from the others here, and so is the Sims gaming community.

I took some time to look at the boards for the other EA games on the forum, and we simmers are definitely having the most difficulty with the switch. My perspective is that forum interaction and community is directly related to the way the game is played, and the Sims is not like the others. This type of forum is fine when gameplay and community are centered around gaining levels, adding in-game allies or friends, getting performance tips, or raising gameplay related questions. Those types of interactions are the basis of the community for those types of games, because the game has structure. There’s only so much to discuss.

A sandbox game like The Sims doesn’t fit in that box. The game itself is open ended. It can be anything we want it to be, and one person’s game is not like anyone else’s. That kind of player directed, open ended game requires a community format that is also open ended and user directed. It needs a loose structure that allows players to share the wide range of possibilities the game gives us.

This forum cannot do this. Big, continuous topics with multiple people sharing stories and screenshots are a staple of the Sims community, and after a matter of only weeks, this forum is breaking under the weight of those long threads. On the old forum, we had topics that were years old, still going strong. Conversational topics, idea threads, creative threads and social threads are being buried under long loads, “see more” scrolling and nested replies that don’t allow a natural flow of ideas and communication.  My own “Blue Moon” thread is becoming difficult to maintain because I can’t even tell where the new responses are, in order to respond back.

While this forum seems to suit games like Star Wars, it is not functional for a game like the Sims and the community that plays it. The Sims is not Star Wars, and it requires a community format that recognizes the difference.

  • cyncie  It took me twelve days to find this post, only because I was trying to follow a notification that said a new comment in Blue Moon was written nine minutes ago. Need I say it didn't work out?  "Show more" no longer works for me. I'm just stuck on the same posts. Also, I am surprised that posts I know I have read a day ago, now suddenly seem to be deleted or hidden behind a layer I do not have access to.

I'm tired. Despite normally possessing a large amount of patience, I feel burnt out. I would like to invite all other tired and depressed Simmers to meet me and fellow dedicated Simmers in Sim Creative. It should not be seen as a competitor to EA's Forum. Just as a peaceful refuge where you can gather new strength while the major reconstruction is underway. 🌞

cyncie  Oh, I see. It looks really good 🤩
It is in a way sad that we are split up into interest groups like that, but this Forum is so hopeless.
I saw that CAPTAIN_NXR7 was snooping around Sim Creatives. (I don't mean snooping in a bad way....it's my stupid translator that can't find a better word.)

I think we part ways here....
I will say that I have really enjoyed Blue Moon, but I also get frustrated by the countless connection failures on the site and the nested responses. It just makes me sad. 😭

A correction. We are not parting here, but the rest is still a sad story 😞

MonaSolstraaleit took me 13 days to see this post because I noticed a mention in my notifications.

That's probably because we can delete posts now, without having to say "deleted".
I recently removed a post myself as it took up too much thread space. I prefer placing picture or text heavy comments under spoilers and since spoiler buttons are not available to us however.....well....it all drove me a little 🌰🥜, so to speak, so I ❌ it. A selfish action, mayhap.

    Not loving the new Forum:

    Dislikes

    • I cannot add video yet
    • I preferred the clarity of the previous Forum's Topic threads, I'm very targeted on what Im interested in on the forum. Im not interested in wading through a bunch of random stuff to get to one or two threads I might read
    • This forum allows for less pictures and is way more finicky about ones that it will accept
    • Just like everything else EA does, its for their pleasure and convenience not ours

    Likes

    • I like the Bullets better. They vary and they are faster to add but can be a bit buggy so 50% Like
    • We have Underline now….But only for OP not responses, lame so 50% Like
    • We have font sizing now…But only for OP not for reply's so it's another 50% Like
    • A lot of my old posts got moved over but a bunch are out of order with the replies and hard to follow 25% Like

  • These "forums" are next to useless. I've been trying for five days now to make a lengthy post that just won't post. Who the (...) thought it was a good idea to launch us into this cluttered, disorganized failure?

It's very sad. I used to visit the forums every day and now I hardly come because it's too frustrating to navigate. It's a big loss to not feel a sense of community with other Simmers. Can't we just return to the old forums?
