Could be because Rossi used it (see Note 9):
What number does Montoya use actually? Have seen something on Reddit suggesting it may be 42...

Montoya had number 6. And Rossi has 42, but he is not legend, or? 😄

Here are all of Montoya’s numbers in his F1 career:
2001: 6 (Williams)
2002: 6 (Williams)
2003: 3 (Williams)
2004: 3 (Williams)
2005: 10 (McLaren)
2006: 4 (McLaren)
Personal car numbers didn’t come into F1 until 2014. From 1996 until 2013, The world champion would take number 1, his teammate number 2 and the rest would be in constructors championship order from the previous season. Prior to 1996, outside of the world champion and their teammate taking car numbers 1 and 2, teams favoured numbers such as Williams with 5 and 6 and Ferrari with 27 and 28

A permanent number can only be reallocated if the driver associated with that number has not participated in a race for two entire consecutive seasons , Rossi race only Two races with it he pick 53 for the 2015 season after two seasons the number is available again so in 2018 after than no one expect test drivers use it so i think it’s a bug if I remember in F1 21 or 22 Number 41 wasn’t also there cuz it was taken by legend Senna cuz he won 41 GPs
