Online matchmaking

Hi all,

Are there going to be any changes to online matchmaking on F122?

On current and previous iterations it feels like this is a bit of a roadblock in both unranked and ranked.

Unranked: an option to "search" to find the most full with available spaces that is currently in lobby would be great. There's nothing worse than always finding races on lap 3 of 20 and having to quit out and search again when you can't join in progress.

Ranked: I totally get why rank and safety rating exists, but there surely has to be a better way that doesn't involve us ending with 4 person lobbies a month after release.

EA have said so far that the game does not need Steam to install or play. I was sure that Steam was the matchmaking client, but I stand to be corrected if that is not the case.

If Origin is mandatory, it could be that that handles matchmaking and the Steam names will be irrelevant.

Vis a vis the "finding races on lap 3 of 20 and having to quit out and search again" the issue is clearly the matchmaking refresh rate as the session progress is clearly inaccurate. I don't think you should be connected to a session except to spectate and if you spectate to the end you then have the option to join the session.

Spectating should not cause any joining issues for anyone either in the lobby or those spectating The host connections need limiting properly when the bandwidth is insufficient and spectators should be the only ones to drop.

The whole of 2021 matchmaking was a complete mess.

i can remeber playing counterstrike on steam 20 years ago and it worked perfectly.

To have these issues in 2022, i have no words….

  • Yeah, I play 99.9% multiplayer and the matchmaking system in previous editions has been embarrassing. I shouldn't spend more time trying to play the game than actually playing the game.

Why can't you join a friend in a ranked lobby? Why can't I see a list of Ranked lobbies and pick the 1 I want to join? I get the rank and safety ratings but something has to change in a big way.

If I have a Bronze rank and an S safety, let me race in whatever lobby I want... if I have a gold rank and a d rating then limit me to c ranked lobbies and below.....and so and so forth...

You're correct as far as I know, though the matchmaking itself was probably made through Codemasters' servers, with the connection side of it being done by the platform's API (such as Steam)

(Future) crossplay would suggest EA servers for matchmaking.
