Can't sign free players in carreer

I think you have to wait until after the transfer window and then they will agree a pre-contract agreement with you to join for free at the start of the next season one their current contract ends. If you try within the transfer window, it would warrant a transfer fee because the transfer would take place immediately while they're still under contract.
