Command HUD randomly activates on its own in ME3 (PC)

Ahoy all! Recently, I've been playing ME3 again, including a lot of multiplayer, but there's a weird and very annoying glitch plaguing me. Basically, the command/tactical HUD (which is supposed to appear when you press and hold Shift and you use it to change weapons, etc.), will randomly activate on its own. It just activates for a split second, so I never actually see it, it comes and goes so fast that I just hear the noise it makes without actually seeing the HUD appear or disappear. At best, this is just kind of annoying, as hearing that sound suddenly happen when I'm not pressing Shift is jarring. However, at worst, it's much more impactful because it can halt my sprint. I'll be holding spacebar sprinting along, and I hear the HUD noise, and then my sprinting stops until I release and re-hold spacebar. This happens in both single-player and multiplayer and is very aggravating, especially in multiplayer.

I have ME3 through Origin; it was originally obtained by buying the physical N7 collection, but on this computer it was simply installed via Origin without using the discs. I originally played through the game years ago, on an entirely different computer than the one I'm using now, and I vaguely recall this issue happening here and there back then, I think? Which would indicate it's not a problem with my machine. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled ME3 entirely, including all the DLC I own.

Has anyone experienced this bug, and does anyone have any idea how I might get rid of it? Any help is appreciated!

  • Update: I did some extensive testing. I found it REALLY unlikely that it could have been my keyboard acting up, because if the Shift key were having a problem, it would have been very noticeable when playing Final Fantasy XIV, which I've played a lot with this keyboard.

I've determined that the issue isn't the game "randomly activating the Command HUD" per se, it's actually: "the game is randomly reading a Left Shift input even if I don't press that key". Whatever is bound to Left Shift will randomly just happen even if the key isn't pressed.

I tested all this by rebinding Command HUD somewhere else, and binding "swap weapon" to Left Shift. I unplugged my main gaming keyboard and mouse, leaving only my cheap wireless keyboard and mouse plugged in. Once I had a save loaded, I switched off both the mouse and keyboard (conveniently the wireless ones I use have off-switches), so I literally was just letting the game sit with no input devices active, and STILL the weapon swap would randomly go off on its own. So it's DEFINITELY the game just randomly reading Left Shift inputs that aren't there, and not something with my keyboard or mouse.

Happily, this means that in theory, I should be able to just make sure that Left Shift isn't bound to anything, and thus this won't happen. At least, hopefully. Still, I'd like to figure out how to STOP this from happening if I can, so again if anyone has experienced anything like this and has any idea how to get rid of it, any help is appreciated!

Point for the detective work!  🙂

The only thing I can think of is just a question: you don't have any mods installed, correct?  If you do, obvious suggestion is to try a virgin game and see if it is still there.

But yeah, at a certain point, not worth driving yourself crazy and instead just switching the HUD to another keybind and leave L-shift unused.

  • Thanks - in truth it wasn't that hard. When I realized I hadn't tried re-mapping Command HUD yet, and put something really easy to see happening (weapon swap) to Left Shift... all I had to do was literally leave the game running and it wasn't long before Shep started switching weapons with no input from me, lol

    Nope, no mods.

As for your last point: I agree and to be honest, as you might have guessed from my lack of reply till now, I kind of gave up when I realized that I can at least "eliminate" the problem in practice by un-mapping Left Shift. Bizarre little glitch, this is, but eh, if I can make it so it doesn't actually show up anymore, then oh well.

Hopefully the Legendary Edition won't have this problem!

Just a note, you may have a background program that is causing ME3 to read left shift as interference.  It doesn't have to be a obvious cause either, but instead it could be discord, or other chat program, a add-on to one of the chat programs or even an installed keyboard that isn't actually a keyboard but the game reads it as such.

Example only....someone had a emoticon add on for a chat program that would prevent certain keys from working in a game, yet all keys worked out of it.  I think they finally did a clean boot, with ONLY the required programs to run the game loaded, and it worked ok, so they slowly added back ones until they found the culprit.

But I am glad you at least have a work around, as it is an odd glitch...luckily not one I have....
