Sorter13 - Are you referring to the beta driver: AMD Catalyst™ 13.11 Beta Driver for Windows® ?
The most common reasons for a black screen issue are:
- Resolution: the screen and/or game screen resolution is not properly adjusted
- Graphic card drivers
- A Windows update is missing
If ever just like Mishkkaa you can launch the game win windowed mode then changing the resolution might help.
Also, if you have not tried yet, please install the Beta driver (link above - Windows 8 users).

Additional information
Need for Speed Rivals crashes when trying to load after the tutorial
Players on Windows 8, when running two AMD 7970 graphics cards with Crossfire functionality, will experience a crash on the loading screen following the Need for Speed Rivals tutorial.
To solve this issue, update to the beta graphics card driver, AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta V9.2, or simply disable Crossfire and unplug the Crossfire cable to prevent the crash. - 12 years ago
Thanks for the help. Yes, I'm currently using the beta driver you linked. But initially was using 13.9.
I can get into windowed mode with ALT+Enter. From there I tried every resolution option, switching to Fullscreen after applying it. Same issue, black screen with sound skipping. Windows says it's all up to date.
It's in another thread here but I've tried:
- Running x86 Mode
- Both modes as Admin
- Both modes with Windows 7 Compatibility
- Disabling Origin Overlay
- Clean install 13.9 ATI Drivers

I can suggest some additional troubleshooting steps.
In Origin right-click on the game image and select properties - In the dropdown list select: Need for Speed Rivals (x86) and apply.
If changing the resolution in game does not help in resolving this issue maybe you can try to adjust the screen resolution in Windows (display settings.)

Videocard: R9-280x 3gb
Tried X86, x64
Have the latest catalyst beta drivers after it did not work with non-beta.
Attempt as admin
attempt to use several resolutions in windowed mode, pressing alt-enter results in a screen flashing between black and dark green stuttering with broken sound as if the game is running at 1-2 FPS, no matter the resolution. Going back to windowed mode, the game works great.
It would appear that all AMD card users are having the same issues.
