Franchise Team Building - Playing vs simming

Do you use different strategies depending on whether you intend to sim a season or play a season?

I think different strategies are necessary.

  1. Defensemen - From my experience playing the franchise it is a HUGE waste of money to pay 9 or 10 million dollars for a top defenseman. If you are simming you might get value from them as long as you do not have higher rated players on your team. The computer seems to assign scoring to the highest rated players whether they be forwards or defensemen when you sim.                                In seasons where I have played I have rarely had a defenseman score more than 50 points no matter how high his rating is. So unless your defenseman is the highest rated player on your team AND you are simming it seems to be a huge waste of money. Additionally do not waste your money on 3rd pair defensemen or 4th line forwards. They won't get enough ice time to improve. NEVER put a rookie you want to develop on the 3rd D pair or 4th F line and sim.
  2. Forwards - It is MUCH harder to find really good defensive forwards than it is to find scorers. Concentrate on getting them first. Don't waste money on 4th line forwards. Get experienced vets you can pay minimal salaries to and save your money for the top 2 lines.
  3. Goalies - If you plan to play don't waste money resigning "elite" goalies once they want big bucks. I really can't tell any difference between a 89 goalie and an 82 goalie when I am playing the game. Trade them once they want the big money.
