Yes it happens with or without him.

Have you tried a factory reset of your console?
Yes I have, I have also changed my DNS settings to what EA help recommended me to do. I have also tried removing my profile and re adding it to my xbox. No solution has worked so far.

I've got a couple of things to try. First, delete the personal saved data for NHL 25 with these steps. There is the risk of losing offline saves and changes to settings you've made. Normally, those download from the cloud, but I can't guarantee this.
- Press the Guide button and then highlight the NHL 25 tile
- Hit the Menu button. It's the small one to the right of the Guide button with 3 horizontal lines on it
- Next, go to Manage game and add-ons > Saved data. Delete the file with your gamertag on it
Also, delete the local saved games with these steps:- On your Xbox, go to Settings > System > Storage devices
- Go to Clear local saved games
- Hit yes
Try these and report back after playing again. I had tried the second option you gave but I just did both now again anyways. Will keep you posted.
Just had a crash in the 3rd period of a playoff game.
Just happened again in the 2nd period of another eashl playoff game

Is it always crashing at the same point? Not necessarily the same time, same period. I mean, after a penalty, scoring a goal, etc. Is there something happening when you crash or is it just mid play?
Pretty much everytime it is during play, nothing particular that I have been able to pinpoint as the problem. Sometimes I'll be taking a faceoff, sometimes skating with the puck, sometimes going for a hit...etc.

Just happened again, this time in the first minute of a playoff game (EASHL)
Just wanted to follow up and see if there's any type of solution. Wasn't exactly a player friendly experience when my team blew a lead late in game 6 of the elite cup finals after my game crashed out of nowhere for probably the 5th or 6th time this playoffs, and we were eliminated as a top 25 club in the world.
