Lost a player who wasn't on the waivers list

I play a franchise with the Avalanche and Makar returned after an injury. I could adapt the squad myself or let the game choose best squad. I did it myself and included Makar in the NHL squad and sent Malinski to AHL. Then a new message popped up and it said Blue Jackets claimed Makar as a waiver and Makar was gone and the game told me to bring a player from AHL to make the NHL squad complete. Makar wasn't even on the Waivers list. I'm basically crying and don't know what to do.

Anyone else experienced to lose a player like this?
