This is strange to me. I play be a pro and I use the poke check all the time and I rarely get a penalty; make sure you use the poke check from the front and side if you use it from the back of the player you get a tripping penalty.
I use the poke check and hip check and rarely use the stick lift that one gets me a penalty most of the time.
