    Yes, Xbox users do need an active XBL Gold subscription to play online.

This is normally a permissions issue with your Xbox/PSN account. Make sure you have multiplayer enabled in your settings. If you do, please contact Xbox/PlayStation support to see if there are any issues with your account that might be causing this issue.

Also, it would be best to post this issue in under the forum for the game you're playing. If that is NHL 24, you can find those forums here.
