Specifically, this is the one subfolder that cured the problem for me:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Origin\Origin

(Yes, the double "Origin" is on purpose: there's an "Origin" subfolder within the main "Origin" folder.)

Deleting this one subfolder resolved the "Well that didn't go as planned" error and brought back the usual game list and full Origin functionality.

If you delete only this subfolder, you will not have to log in to Origin again and all your Origin application settings will be retained.

Next time add as well that you need internet to do this.....I did this and now I have to wait till I get Internet to log back into my origin after this....just a FYI.....also I think this origin thing to be able to play sims is stupid.....if had nothing but issues and problems with this app.....it's stupid and not needed imo .... So so far this so called solution has actually caused me more issues then fix....so again next time add you need to be connected to the Internet to do this fix....

I suppose you've solved the issue since then, but in case anyone else wonders: I had to run the task manager and make sure Origin Client Service and Origin Web Helper Service were disabled - one of them was still running even though I had quit the program.

Well I did all of the above and it appeared to work, 3 weeks later it was back, so through the whole lot again and again it worked, for a time. It is not fixed, the basic flaw is still there.

It just hit me yet again. Really stopped counting how many times this happened with Origin.

However I want to update Accepted Solution.

Delete only:

Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Origin\Origin and Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Origin\WebCache

If you Delete* files from every 3 directories like suggested in the Accepted Solution Origin will start in default mode. Updating ALL games which are not in vanilla state.

Enough to say that for titles like ME2 or ME3 especially its murder. 

* - Before deleting anything make copy of folders you're removing. That way you can always copy back, it will be still broken Origin, but it'll work as before. Deleting everything outright is bad idea - especially if you're running mods for games. Focus only on mentioned 2 directories first (real client cache). 

I expect that it happens more often when using VPN. And so I do, often forgetting to disable it when opening Origin (O drops a loooot when play over VPN - then only game client which drops....)

And I agree with Althalus401. This basic flaw is basically ever present since I remember using Origin.
