Can't get Spore to run on Mac OS X El Capitan

I recently decided to start playing my Spore game after being inactive for a few months. The game was no longer on my system, so I had to re-download it. The download and installation both completed successfully, but launching the actual game is where things started to get tricky. Upon launching the game, I am prompted with a message that says "An update for Spore is available. Would you like to update? (Y/N)". When I press no, the game begins to start up, but crashes before it gets past the black screen in the beginning. The error message reads "Exception Raised. Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at adress 0x00ab5250. Do you wish to debug it? (Y/N)". Pressing yes or no at this prompt will crash the game immediately. At the very beginning, if I press "yes" to update the game instead, something will start loading and load for a while, but after it looks like it has finished loading, the game just prompts me again with the original update message. No matter if I chose to update or not, I can't get Spore to launch. I love this game and I'm a bit sad that I can't figure out how to get it working. If you want to help, get back to me and ask questions if something was unclear. By the way, I'm running a Mac OS El Capitan. Thanks.

Hey so like an hour after I told you it still wasn't working, I tried updating it and while it did crash again, after trying to launch it one last time and pressing "no" to the update, the game actually launched normally. Sadly none of my data was saved but I'm glad I was able to get the game to launch. I'm sure changing the fboflowback helped. Thanks for everything, Liz.

It would be much appreciated if someone could contact me with a solution ASAP 🙂

  • Hi @CadeTheCool,

first disable your Time Machine while playing Spore, it can interfere with this process

Say no, launch the game via Cider

Go to"APPLICATIONS" click on the "SPORE" folder
Make a right click and select "SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS"
    Click on the Contents Folder
Afterwards on the MacOS Folder and with double click select either cider or cider_noui exce

Say no and switch the Backbuffer from 0 to 1

Hey Liz. I followed all of your instructions and the only difference is that the screen turns white now as the launch window is loading. I still get the exact same "Exception Raised. Unhandled page fault..." error, even with the fbobackbuffer set to "1". As you requested, here is my model and specs. It's a 13-inch Macbook Pro (though the size shouldn't matter) running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.5. The processor is a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5. Memory: 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536MB. The Macbook is from 2012, but It's still in excellent shape and I've never had any issues with speed or performance. Also I still have a ton of unused memory and what should be enough RAM to run the game. Keep in mind that I've been able to run the game many times in the past without much issue. If you can think of another solution or you need more info, let me know.

    Thanks for the help.

Okay from the hardware should work @CadeTheCool

    Navigate to the following path
    ~/Library/Preferences/SPORE Preferences/

    and delete these two files
    system.reg
    user.reg

Perhaps have you a corrupt registry

    Afterwards start Spore again.
The game need round about 30-90 sec. loading time , before the Maxis logo shown up

    Good luck
