Game is installed via Origin (originally purchased on Steam, support added the game to my Origin account)
Spore is listed in Origin library
Spore was registered 2021-06-22
I can login to spore.com and it shows my email
I am attempting to register with the 3 boxes
Email, password, and desired username are 16 characters or less
I'm still getting the "An unknown error has occurred during registration. Please try again later" message.
Definitely looking to be a server issue. The message that shows up is being produced by the server itself - the entire in-game registration window is actually just a webpage on spore.com, https://community.spore.com/community/auth/registerNew (note that the page won't load unless it's accessed by the game) and that webpage contains the error message.
So it's definitely not some sort of connection issue or anything, and it does correctly identify when the email/password is incorrect or a Spore persona already exists on that account. The rest of the Spore server seems to be operating normally.
I'm gonna play around with it some more, but there's not a whole lot I can do as I don't work for EA or Maxis. Might need to try and get in contact with them, if there's no response on this forum then I'll see if can find anyone with contacts at Maxis. Last I heard the live ops team (which manages the Spore server) was mostly working on other Maxis products so not sure who all is still there, but there should be someone who can look into it.
I'm guessing there was some backend change, possibly on the Origin side, that broke the connection between the Spore server and the Origin server, thus it can't validate whether an account owns the game. It might be possible to manually upload your CD key into the Spore server, as this was possible years ago (performed automatically by the game), since the disc version did not require use of Origin. Going to research that a bit, in case we don't hear from Maxis soon.

If anyone is able to successfully register at all, please post here! It would be very helpful to try and troubleshoot this issue for those who are affected.
If you are willing to help, please include where you purchased Spore (Origin, Steam, GOG), and the approximate date you purchased the game, and registered a Spore persona in-game.
Spore.com stats are reporting that new users are indeed being registered, so assuming this counter is working, it seems like it's not broken for everyone. Hopefully we can narrow down why some users are affected, since it seems like there's quite a few people hitting this problem.

@Kyle_NecrowolfI'm also unable to register, I match all the steps you listed before ☹️
EDIT: Bought on Steam, redeemed on Origin, and now using hte Origin version to try and connect

I'm unable to register as well; Both Steam and Origin don't work at all. This is really annoying.

Running into the same issue. Bought on Steam and had EA Support add the games to my Origin account. It shows when I use an invalid login for registering but otherwise it either tells me it can't connect to the Spore servers or that an unknown error occurred. I already went through chat support twice and they couldn't do anything for me.
I've made sure my firewall wasn't blocking any access and I watched my router log just to see if maybe it was catching it when trying to register, but nothing comes up. I'm just glad to see this isn't an isolated issue.

This makes me curious; why is this happening? Others can apparently register just fine; on GOG there are no problems at all I've heard. Why is this such an issue for the rest of us?
- 4 years ago@pitchtheripoff That's what I'm trying to figure out. There should be no difference between the different editions when it comes to server access - in all cases, it needs to be registered on Origin.
The actual game for Steam and GOG is also identical, the GOG version just has an extra file that "pretends" to be Steam and activates the game without actually opening (or requiring) Steam.
Nevertheless I don't think this is an issue with the game itself (so it won't matter where it's installed from), since as I said, the error message comes from a webpage on spore.com, not the game itself. Error can be reproduced in a modified web browser, no game required.
Steam doesn't include a CD key which makes the "register on Origin" part difficult, since EA support has to do it manually, but otherwise there's no difference. GOG provides the CD key on purchase, and Origin automatically puts it into the library.
I haven't actually been able to personally get in touch with anyone who has registered successfully, but there are some accounts in existence so it seems like it should be possible. - 4 years ago
@Kyle_NecrowolfIf it needs to be registered to Origin then apparently my Origin copy isn't registered because I can't connect there either. This is ridiculous. You'd think Origin would work the best considering it's EA's platform. If they don't want to fix the game then why keep it's servers up? Makes no sense

@Kyle_Necrowolf The only thing I could think of is that a certain batch of keys (those purchased on Steam and transfered/added to Origin) isn't inlcuded on the Spore server which checks wether it's a valid key or not. But then you'd expect an error like 'invalid key' or 'key not found' or something similar. Not a generic error.
- 4 years ago@0rangeAedan Maybe the recent batch of Origin keys for Steam buyers added by support were the "Spore community access only" keys that a guide I read once warned were the wrong keys to redeem?
I'm not quite sure, EA Support gave me the product key for my Spore copy and attempting to redeem it in Origin shows it as a standard key, nothing about community access.

As long as the game is listed in the Origin My Game Library, the game is considered to be registered to the account, this is called an entitlement.
I don’t believe the Spore server specifically needs the actual key but I will check into that. As far as I can tell, it just checks for the entitlement, not a key.
I did find a workaround to register a Spore persona, but it’s a little convoluted to do. I’m not 100% sure if it will let you upload creations, since it creates the persona but does not actually grant an entitlement (and entitlements are checked when uploading creations), but all other online functionality should work. Will post more details soon.

@Kyle_NecrowolfWell, as long as I can download creations this shouldn't be an issue
You're a life savior for this community lol - 0rangeAedan4 years agoSeasoned Rookie
@Kyle_Necrowolf If that registration form (wether in game or not) performs a check on entitlement, then it would be logical it's checked with some server from Origin. But it would be a lot easier if the Spore registration server has the original key algotrithm to run the check by, because of less dependacy on other servers. Oh well. What would I know :-)
Don't mind sharing that complicated way of registering a Spore persona you mentioned, I'm quite tech savvy and happy to help. This issue is driving me nuts for quite some time now, can't stand it *lol*
@voidhomu don't know, got any references on that?

Can you tell us the workaround?Thank you!

@TheEccentric123 there's no workarround -yet-. This issue is going on for quite some time now, and alot of people have been looking in to it. Most of the time without any success though. You should search the web for any tips & tricks resolving this issue, in case you hadn't done that yet.

There are not many answers,I tried some things and they didn't fix the problem. It's pretty frustrating....

@0rangeAedan , @Kyle_Necrowolf said he has a workaround
- 0rangeAedan4 years agoSeasoned Rookie@TheEccentric123 sort of, yeah.
- 4 years ago@TheEccentric123 Question is if he'll be willing to release how to do it

Let's hope for the best

Small update on the workaround I mentioned…
We’re trying to implement it via a mod that can be installed for the game. This would be the easiest and most seamless solution, since you would just register in-game as normal. Nothing would be different, it would just load a version of the registration page that does not include the entitlement check.
This solution would still not allow uploading most creations, as I mentioned, because entitlements are checked during every creation upload.
I’m also looking into alternative solutions that may grant the entitlements, which would be an ideal solution instead of this workaround. Nevertheless either way we’ll still likely implement it via a mod.

@Kyle_NecrowolfThank you so much 🙏🙏 how long would the mod take to make?

I have some very good news!
I did some more testing and discovered that the game has a feature to upload the CD key directly from the game to the Spore server, during registration. So all we have to do is make a mod that re-enables this feature, and allows the user to manually enter the code (normally it is only retrieved if on a disc version), and that should cause the server to detect the code, and grant the entitlement directly through the Spore server instead of trying to pull it from origin.
It might even be possible to re-enable this feature without needing a mod, though that would likely require manually inserting the code into the windows registry. I will see if that works, and if so, I'll post whichever ends up being easier.
Need to do some additional testing to make sure this is in fact the case, but as far as I can tell right now, this should work perfectly, and grants the entitlement that allows creations to be uploaded (my other workaround did not). Will probably post an update tomorrow.
