Is it not possible to chat in game with EA friends, or am I missing something?

My friend and I purchased Grid Legends for crossplay capabilities.  He is on PS5 and I'm on Xbox Series X.  We can join each others lobbies - but no chat.  I like to think I'm missing something as it...

Second this - waste of money if I can’t even speak to my friends whilst playing. What is the point in cross play if it doesn’t work?!
