Noticed certain characters like the imp, soldier and all-star have unlockable pig-tail hair styles, scientist has an alternate. Any people know if less goofy female hairstyles can be unlocked because I'm currently pretending the long cheek beard on my Archaeologist is actually bangs sticking out of her/his hat. I like the game a lot but playing as a guy is icky for me.

You're playing as a zombie. And even if you weren't how could it possibly be "icky" to play as a guy? I won't go into how ridiculous that is. As far as I'm aware, in any case, there are no other female hairstyles for the zombies.
The plants are, for one thing, alive. For another they're plants. More than that they have a theme. Flowers are female, food and whatever the hell the chomper is are male. Flowering plants are female in real life too so it makes sense.
Now let's look at the zombies: An engineer, football star, infantry man, mad scientist, super hero, imp, pirate captain.
All of these are stereo typically male. And even if they weren't, there's no theme that can be applied to them.

Semantically the Plants are actually more mindless then the Zombies. Zomboss may be a dictator but the Zombies still * around as they please in Zomburbia for the most parts, regardless of how strict some of Zomboss' factories are.
However in Suburbia grass is cut, gardens are made and pretty much every generic means of entrapping and artificially producing plants is practiced, as Crazy Dave grows and treats them like pawns. The Zombies build machines to act as defenses yet the Plants create actual life to be born and die simply in the name of a single battle.
So technically Zomboss is the better leader since while both he and Crazy Dave are very sociopathic towards their underlings, Zomboss is significantly less intense about it and doesn't treat their lives as being anywhere near as meaningless as Crazy Dave was. I legitimately would rather live under Zomboss then Dave, especially considering how much destruction and death is caused by Crazy Dave being "crazy". Like the time when he sends plants to fight and die to obtain his shoes which he left to dry by a volcano.
