Many Players who have difficulty with the Trial of Recollection find that recruiting a friend or relative to assist- whether by helping to remember the symbol order or taking a quick photo with a cell phone to read them back.
As for what character to use, use a higher level character which has earned their Speed Upgrade if you have one available- if you have a Super Elite or Mastered Hot Rod Chomper he has two Speed Upgrades which can be earned making him probably the fastest character when both are enabled.

This has certainly been the most challenging trial. Unfortunately the screenshot won't work. As soon as you activate the lever the symbols change. @realitysquared is right. A partner is the way to go. With the amount of old people on this forum...short term memory has affected most of us for this trial. I had to get my son to do it.
