My 5yr old wants to play by himself but game will not allow him.

You must have a gold account and be connected to online in order to play Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare as it is an online only game .

If you have both of the above, in order to play by oneself, they must create a Garden Ops game and change permission to Invite Only. After this is done, the player is able to start games by themselves.

Technically though, the game is a multiplayer online game, so the option presented by the above user is really the only "Alone " option for him

You could always load him into Gardens and graveyards or vanquish, mute all the other players and let him run around as well 🙂

This game has a PEGI 7 rating.

Its an issue with either the parental settings on the xbox account OR the Origin account you are linked to

What Origin Account did you use?

unfortunately I dont know much about parental accounts, you might have to contact customer service or Origin Customer Service

Please pay attention to the box before buying a game, it says clearly on the front and the back of the box that it's an online only game. 

Sign in as you and let them play. Disable the Kinect auto sign in also. My 3 yr old loves this game.
