I'm having the same problems. Here are my particulars:
I'm on the Xbox One platform.

My NAT Type is OPEN
I have the following ports open:
UDP -> Any -> 88
TCP -> Any -> 3074
UDP -> Any - >3074
TCP -> Any -> 80
UDP -> Any -> 53
TCP -> Any -> 53
The game will load and then it gets to the opening screen where it says to Press Menu Button.
I press the menu button and it comes up with a box on the screen that says "Connection" - "Connecting to EA Servers". It does that for about 30 seconds and then comes back and says "Unable to connect to EA Servers. Please check your network connection and try back later".
It then takes me to the actual menu "Garden Ops", "Multiplayer", etc..
Any option I select except for the "More..." option I get the same "Connection" box and message, tries for 30 seconds and then gives me the same message as I got at the beginning.
I am also in the Dallas area and on Verizon Fios. This seems to be a rather common thread amongst the issues I'm seeing. My guess is EA is going to tell us that it's our ISP is the issue and that we have to deal with them.
I will give this game 1 more try this afternoon once I am off work and if it's not working then I am going to take the game to GameStop and get whatever credit I can for it and I WILL NEVER buy another game that EA is involved in. They've had 2 failed lanuches recently (BF4 and PlantsvsZombie) and their track record is beginning to show.
